AEW Backstage Reaction To Tony Khan’s ‘Embarrassing’ Jinder Mahal Comments Revealed WWE/AEW

The reaction in AEW to Tony Khan’s recent Twitter outburst criticizing WWE for putting Jinder Mahal in a title match has been revealed.

Khan would make his post on January 9 after it was revealed that Mahal would be facing Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

He would state that there was a “double standard”, comparing the win-loss record of Mahal with the record of the AEW World Champion contender, HOOK.

Suffice to say, there was quite the response to Khan’s post from across the wrestling spectrum, fans and wrestlers alike.

On the January 11 Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez would share some of the internal reaction in AEW, revealing:

“Here’s the thing, I got a lot of tweets, it was the exact same thing as last time, I got a lot of tweets from people in AEW who were like ‘Why is he doing this on Twitter? This is embarrassing.’

“That’s what they said, they said it last time too, I’m sure he’s aware of it.

“But he sees this as ‘look at all this engagement I get for these tweets and then I can tweet out some promotion for some matches for Wednesday and it’ll help boost the rating’, that’s why he does it.”

Khan recently commented on ‘Wrestling Twitter’, exploring the pros and cons and stating that it’s “a bit of an echo chamber… also there’s a lot of bad faith.”

Bully Ray was critical of Khan’s approach to the supposed “double standard” suggesting an alternative for how the AEW owner could have handled it.

As for Jinder Mahal, he appeared on WWE’s The Bump and addressed the attention he had received following his WWE Raw Day 1 appearance and the January 9 tweet that had seen him trending on the social media platform.

In December 2023, it was reported that there was “negativity” backstage in AEW, with the performance of Collision and the departure of Kevin Sullivan being contributing factors.

QT Marshall was another name who departed in 2023, with frustration playing a part in his decision to leave the company.
