AEW
The recent episode of AEW Collision saw one star suffer an injury during their Continental Challenge Cup first-round match.
Airing on August 15, AEW Collision saw Nigel McGuinness compete in the first round of the Continental Challenge Cup, scoring a victory over Katsuyori Shibata.
Despite the success, McGuinness was noted as suffering an injury during the match, with his status for the tournament now being clarified.
Speaking on the Continental Challenge Cup Quarterfinal Selection Special, McGuinness shared an update on his injury while sporting a walking boot, typically used to immobilize the lower leg, saying:
“So, they’ve asked me for an update and, well, here it is.
“X-rays didn’t show any break or fracture; that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt like hell.
“A different man, a smarter man, a more prudent man might say, ‘Now’s the time to bow out. No way you’re going to be 100 per cent.’

McGuinness would go on to discuss his standing compared to the “more prudent man”, confirming he’s still in the tournament, stating:
“Clearly, I’m not that man. There’s something about being a pro-wrestler that we all share: that little bit of crazy, in some cases, a lot of a bit of crazy.
“Now, people might be waiting for that rah-rah speech, how nothing’s going to stop me getting to Wembley Stadium, but, the reality, there’s plenty of things that can stop me getting to Wembley Stadium; the ankle, my opponent, even the good Lord himself.
“But, I can tell you what won’t stop me; fear. I spent a good portion of my career in pain and, in a way, I kind of feel like I did back then. But, in other ways, this feels different.”

Recognizing that time is short as an in-ring competitor, McGuinness would call the Continental Cup a “last chance”, explaining:
“I know this is the end of my career and, as such, this could be the last chance I get to compete in the Continental Cup.
“You know, it’s funny, when we started out with this, I said, ‘Better a lion for a day than a lamb for a lifetime.’
“I had no idea how true that would prove, cos I am afraid, but not too afraid to stop. Someone else is gonna have to stop me, and I can promise whoever I face next, I will claw and bit and use every legal advantage to get past you and get one step closer to the hallowed grounds of Wembley Stadium where, 34 years ago, I realized I would be a pro-wrestler.”

It was revealed, during the selection, that McGuinness will face Hechicero in the quarterfinal, with that match taking place on this week’s AEW Dynamite.
Hechicero defeated Brian Cage to progress in their first-round match on the same episode of Collision that saw McGuinness move forward.
The Return of Nigel McGuinness
Having retired in 2011, McGuinness would go on to make a career a commentatory, bringing his experience to Ring of Honor, WWE and AEW over the years.
That all changed at All In at Wembley Stadium in August 2024, with McGuinness making an in-ring return in the Casino Gauntlet, having signed with the company the previous year, joining the commentary team in ROH and AEW.
Since that in-ring return, McGuinness has been used sparingly but in prominent encounters and would reveal that, despite his duel use, he remains under a single contract with AEW.
In 2026, to date, McGuinness has competed twice, winning a Pure Rules match against Josh Woods at ROH Supercard of Honor in May, with his previous bout closing out 2025 at Global Wars United Kingdom, defeating Wheeler Yuta.
For McGuinness, his in-ring career may be coming to an end, but the possibility of making it Wembley Stadium would be a superb full-circle moment for the veteran star.
