A former WWE star thinks CM Punk “took an L” by calling Kevin Owens fat during their promo exchange on SmackDown.
The Friday, August 14 episode of SmackDown saw Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and his number one contender Kevin Owens go to war on the microphone for the second straight week ahead of their anticipated title match in Toronto on August 21.
Even more so than their first exchange, Punk and Owens dived into their 20-year history with one another dating back to their shared time in Ring of Honor in the mid 2000s and unpacked the reasons for their animosity towards one another.
Tying into that history, one angle Punk took during his exchange with Owens was commenting on his physique, as he closed out the segment by vowing to put Owens’ “fat ass to sleep” in Toronto on Friday.
On the latest episode of Busted Open, Bully Ray and Raj Dhesi (Jinder Mahal) unpacked the segment and both took issue with Punk’s comments regarding Owens’ weight.
Bully said Punk calling Owens fat meant “absolutely nothing” considering ‘The Prizefighter’s’ body of work in WWE:
“Here’s the thing about the fat slob comment or whatever colorful language Punk used last week. Telling Kevin that he’s fat, or needs to wear a shirt, I believe means absolutely nothing.
“Because I believe fans realize that ok, he doesn’t go to the gym, he’s a little chubby and he wears a shirt. He’s also main evented WrestleMania against f**king Steve Austin, he headbutted Vince McMahon in the face, he tears down the house every time he’s in the ring, he knocks the promos out of the park, he gets massive pops blah blah blah I could go on all day.
“Who cares if he wears a shirt? Who cares if he likes to go to catering twice a day? And who cares if he doesn’t have abs?
“Dusty didn’t have abs, neither did f**king I and I wear a shirt and I’m a two-time World Heavyweight Champion in TNA. My point is Kevin Owens doesn’t have to be a body guy to be a top guy.”
Raj Dhesi would then jump in to agree with Bully’s comments, stating that Punk “took an L” going in that direction for his promo, while also warning that he needs to be careful in taking such jabs if he’s seeking to remain a babyface in the feud:
“That to me, Punk took a bit of an L even going that direction. Yes I understand, he’s trying to take a personal jab at him.
“Give me something better Punk, give me something better. Dude, come on. The lines are so blurred between who’s a babyface and who’s a heel across the entire landscape in WWE, but Punk has to be a bit careful in this situation.”
