Late Changes To AEW Dynamite Due To Injury Concerns Revealed

There were late changes to the September 27 episode of AEW Dynamite following Rey Fenix being medically cleared to wrestle.

On last week’s September 20 Grand Slam special episode of Dynamite, Jon Moxley defended his AEW International Championship against Rey Fenix, which didn’t go as planned.

The match saw Jon Moxley get injured during the pre-match brawl, which led to an audible being called and Fenix instead pinning Moxley to become the International Champion, despite the original plan being for Moxley to retain.

PWTorch reported that Moxley has been diagnosed with a concussion that actually occurred during the pre-match brawl rather than during the match itself.

It emerged that on the same dive that led to the Moxley concussion, Fenix suffered an injury as well.

Before yesterday’s AEW Dynamite, Tony Khan would reveal that Fenix had been medically cleared to wrestle but Moxley wasn’t.

Dave Meltzer has now revealed that Fenix’s medical clearance caused some late changes to the episode of Dynamite.

Speaking about what happened before show time on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer stated:

“They had to change the show around. The Fenix match almost didn’t happen because of the injury that you talked about.

“Fenix was not cleared, or I should say, it was up in the air if he would be cleared. He had not been cleared.

“He did get cleared to wrestle in this match, but it was not until late in the afternoon.

“So they had apparently put together a show without him, and then they had to change it to put the match with Jarrett on, which was basically a late addition to the show.

“And then Moxley wasn’t cleared due to the concussion. So, a lot of planned stuff must have changed because of all that.”

Fenix would retain the AEW International Championship in his match against Jeff Jarrett in his first defense of the title.

There would also be a Number 1 Contender’s match for the title with Nick Jackson beating Brian Cage and Claudio Castagnoli.

In the aftermath of the title change, it was reported that a “non-AEW wrestler” was supposed to come out post-match to challenge Moxley at AEW WrestleDream.

Meltzer has also recently noted that Moxley’s injury is “nothing of grave concern” but he’s “gotta pass protocols” before he can return.

Fenix is scheduled to be part of a four-way tag team match at WrestleDream this Sunday.
