AEW
Tony Khan has praised Jon Moxley for his backstage role in AEW, suggesting the star has been a constant over the past few years.
Having parted ways with WWE following his contract expiring on April 30, 2019, the former “Dean Ambrose” would revert to his Jon Moxley name for his debut at AEW Double or Nothing that May.
A prominent component of AEW television programming, Moxley’s backstage role was the subject of praise from Tony Khan in comments made to nine.com.au.
While speaking about his own AEW schedule, Tony Khan said:
“The thing with wrestling that’s very different is there’s no off-season. We have a great group, but I’m generally the only person who comes to every show.
“In recent years, Jon Moxley is doing a great job backstage and has been at everything … but I have been at every AEW show since the beginning.
“It’s a lot of travel, but I love it.”
Khan previously stated that Moxley has been “so important to the foundation of the company from the very first show he’s been here”, calling the AEW star a leader inside and outside of the ring.
The current AEW Continental Champion, Moxley successfully defended the title against Kyle O’Reilly at Double or Nothing on May 24.
‘We Took You For Granted’
Signing with WWE in 2011, the star known as Dean Ambrose would be an instrumental component of The Shield, holding the Raw Tag Team Championship with Seth Rollins, as well as seeing runs as WWE Champion, United States Champion and a three-time Intercontinental Champion.
Despite all the accolades and praise, the relationship would see Ambrose part ways with WWE when his contract expired, later revealing a conversation with Vince McMahon, when the then-executive, allegedly told him, “we took you for granted.”
That revelation would also see Moxley note that he “took a lot of pride in our work and our work ethic”. Interestingly, Moxley uses the word “our” instead of “my”, which could be just a turn of phrase but, combined with the comments of Khan, suggests that he sees himself as part of a wider collective instead of just an island on his own that happens to be part of something bigger.
There’s little doubt that Moxley, in AEW, has found a direction that was lacking for him in later years over in WWE. As the leader of Death Riders, the star has brought intensity to the roster, with their recent alliance with Will Ospreay adding an edge to another popular star.
The current Continental Champion, a four-time AEW World Champion, and former International Champion, Moxley is missing a tag team championship run. There’s still plenty of time, though.
