A free agent star has addressed the speculation regarding his future in pro wrestling amid rumors he could be potentially WWE bound.
Earlier this year it was reported that WWE had interest in experienced independent wrestler Richard Holliday, after he attended a tryout for the company in February.
Rumors that he could be WWE bound then picked up again in July, when the former MLW star left his boots in the middle of the ring at GCW’s Melee in Manchester event.
Over a month on from doing this, Holliday took to social media to promise fans that he would be addressing the situation this weekend.
Given that WWE NXT Heatwave is happening today, Sunday (August 30), fans naturally wondered whether this explanation could potentially come at the event when Holliday debuts.
While there is always a chance we could still see Holliday in WWE soon, for now, the 33-year-old is having a bit of fun with the speculation, as he revealed that the reason he took his boots off in GCW last month was because they had a rip in them, and he decided it was time for an upgrade.
Posting to Twitter, Holliday explained:
“There’s been a ton of speculation about when I took by boots off at GCW in July, I left my boots in the middle of the ring. And I know that’s symbolic for some things and a lot of people were speculating that I could be retiring. Other people were just saying that I’m moving on and doing something different, and some of those people are right.
“I am moving on in my career, I’m starting to do different things and I needed new boots for it. And that’s really what it was, I took off my boots because there was a rip in that boot and it started to become a little unsafe. I was just thinking I shouldn’t continue wearing these boots so I took them off.
“The fans at GCW they just kind of gave me an ovation, I’d never really seen anybody really react to somebody just kind of changing their wardrobe like that, but I ran with it, it was awesome. They gave me a whole standing ovation for taking off my boots and I was like, thanks. It was great, it was super unexpected but I appreciated it.
“So, I’m hoping that these boots are just gonna breathe some new life. These are pretty awesome boots, I added a little design. But that’s all it was, I got new boots, but I appreciate you checking in, thank you so much.”

Holliday has been an ever-present figure on the independents over the past decade, with perhaps his most prominent run coming in MLW where he was aligned with former AEW World Champion MJF and Alexander Hammerstone in The Dynasty, and later Alicia Atout as the ‘Clout Couple.’
As well as MLW, Holliday has worked for the likes of GCW, Beyond Wrestling and the NWA – where he currently reigns as the NWA Midwest Champion.
We will provide updates on Holliday’s future and potential move to WWE as more information becomes available.
