Paul Heyman has publicly confirmed some previously planned WWE WrestleMania 42 main events – but there are some misconceptions going around.
It’s been well documented over the past few months that WWE has altered its WrestleMania plans this year multiple times, which has sometimes been forced by injury and other times just due to creative decisions.
During an interview with his son Jacob on Instagram, Paul Heyman was asked if it “pisses him off” that he’s not involved in either of the WrestleMania main events this year, the first time that’s happened since 2019.
Heyman replied by pointing out that at difference stages, planned main events did include him being involved. He said:
“I don’t think it’s a big secret that everything was driving this year to be Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns, and then that fell apart.
“And then it was going to be Bron Breakker vs CM Punk, and that fell apart.
“So I was in line to be a part of the main event this year and fate intervened not once but even twice.”

After Heyman’s comments, there’s a misconception going around that he was suggesting these were set to be the two WrestleMania main events, one on each night, but that’s not the case.
These were merely the planned World Heavyweight Championship main events at different stages – with Breakker vs Punk coming after the Rollins vs Reigns match was thrown off.
When Rollins vs Reigns was the plan for the World Title, the Undisputed WWE Championship main event was going to be Cody Rhodes vs CM Punk.
Then later, when things changed due to Rollins’ injury and the World Title plan was switched to Punk vs Bron Breakker, at that point, the planned Undisputed WWE Title match was to be Rhodes vs Reigns.
So, just to clear that up because some fans and even outlets online have taken Heyman’s comments to mean he was saying those two matches were the planned main events for each night at the same stage.

Why WrestleMania 42 Main Events Were Changed
As noted, the reason the original plans (Rollins vs Reigns and Rhodes vs Punk) changed was because of Rollins’ injury.
Then, the secondary plans (Punk vs Breakker and Rhodes vs Reigns) were changed because Triple H didn’t want to run Rhodes vs Reigns for the third time in four years.
Of course, things later settled on Rhodes vs Randy Orton for the WWE Title – albeit with the late addition of Pat McAfee – and then Punk vs Reigns for the World Championship.
At one point before Orton won the Elimination Chamber, Rhodes was planned to face Drew McIntyre, but it was decided that match had already taken place too many times in recent months for it to happen again at Mania.
