Paul Heyman has opened up about his role behind the scenes in WWE, which seems to have an unspecified yet far-reaching nature.

The backstage position is in addition to the position that Heyman holds on television, which recently saw his long-term client, Brock Lesnar, retire as a WWE star.

Speaking on Six Feet Under, The Undertaker would question Heyman about his current role, describing it as “unspecified”, reflecting on how Triple H referred to him as a “consigliere”.

With Heyman in that advisory role, the Hall of Famer would reveal what being referred to as the ‘consigliere’ meant to him, saying:

“That’s how (Triple H) he described it. He put it, you know, they came to me on the Hall of Fame, I’m sure they asked you the same thing, “what do you want on the ring?” and I (said) “whatever you want to put on the ring, you know. Surprise me. I don’t know”. I’m kind of uncomfortable (with) “put this on… GOAT, good-looking. You deserve a raise.”

“So, I just said, “whatever Paul wants”, and I never talked about it publicly… but he put the word ‘consigliere’ on it, which really moved me when I saw it. It caught me off guard.”

Taking a deeper look into his current role, Heyman would indicate he’s there to bring the best out of any and all WWE stars, stating:

“You know the old expression “I serve at the pleasure of the chairman, I serve at the pleasure of the President”? I serve at the pleasure of the Chief Content Officer.”

“So, if he sees somebody and he says, they gotta break through on their promos. They’re in the own way. They’re in the own head. Hey, there’s an A, but they need to be an A+++. They’re a C, they need to be an A. Whatever it is, find it in them. Help pull it out of them.” That becomes my assignment.

“Now, sometimes that’s a one-day process. Sometimes that becomes a life mission. It all depends on the talent. It all depends on their openness to reach inside and pull it out of themselves. How much they like working with me, if they do at all. Sometimes it’s just a quick thing; “help this person through this promo today”. Sometimes it’s “make this your project.”

“And, I love working with really, really talented people that want to go that next step, that want to take it even further. It’s the like the old thing about Michael Jordan showing up at 5 o’clock or 7 o’clock practice. Why? Because there’s other people who want to become Michael Jordan and he ain’t gonna let them.”

Heyman reflected on how, when first put with Roman Reigns, they’d talk on the phone, derailing general conversations by asking questions about the star’s real life before drawing out of him how the Tribal Chief would answer the same question as a way of enabling more comfortable character work.

Asked who he’s currently working with, Heyman would comment that Royce Keys, despite how long he’s been in the business, is unaware of “how truly talented he is“.

Heyman would go on to state that he’s “here to help in whatever assists the cause of the promotion to move forward.”

Avoiding The Cookie Cutter Approach

It would be easy for Paul Heyman to rely on the “cookie cutter” approach when it comes to nurturing the talent within WWE stars, producing the same thing over and over again, sending them out to television to sink or swim on their own terms. It would be equally easy to just rely on a “greatest hits” approach, with Heyman taking the mindset of “this working for Roman/Brock/Punk” and doing nothing beyond that.

Heyman, however, is a creative powerhouse and a respected figure behind the scenes in WWE, clearly with the weight of Triple H as Chief Content Officer behind him.

Bron Breakker has previously discussed his relationship with Heyman, revealing that they have been taking an in-depth exploration into the WWE star’s “entire presentation”. With that work spanning months, it has clearly allowed the star to chart the improvements he has experienced under Heyman’s guidance.

Triple H himself confirmed that he had requested that Heyman work with Breakker, with the consigliere feeding back to the WWE executive and the writers, serving as a conduit between talent and creative.

Between Heyman and AJ Styles, who is also on board to help stars improve, WWE continues to build an enviable support system for its current and future roster.
