Ever since the All Mighty Bobby Lashley captured the WWE Championship from The Miz back on March 1, many people have been speculating about the potential dream match against Brock Lesnar.
The reports broke last night (July 15) that Lashley vs Lesnar was not the plan for SummerSlam, with WWE allegedly opting for Goldberg to challenge Lashley instead.
Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer, we may now have a better idea as to why the match between Lashley and Lesnar is not happening, and it’s to do with the potential feud with Roman Reigns.
Meltzer said:
The Lesnar match was talked about a lot but constantly denied. The feeling was that Lesnar isn’t coming back for a number of shows right now, so he’d have to lose. And those in the Reigns camp see Reigns vs. Lesnar with the Heyman history as a big program not to be weakened by Lesnar doing a job or doing a non-finish with Lashley right now. Like I’ve said before, in 1985 that would be how I’d see it, but today I don’t see a Lesnar lost to Lashley this year hurting a 2023 program with Reigns vs. Lesnar.
Goldberg is reportedly slated to make his WWE return on this Monday’s episode of Raw to set up a match with the All Mighty at SummerSlam.
Paul Heyman himself was recently asked about the possibility of the Tribal Chief and the Beast Incarnate facing off, and whose side he would choose in that scenario.
