An update has emerged on recent reports that some within AEW were considering leaving the company for WWE.
Dave Meltzer had previously stated that there were several names who were interested in a potential WWE run, but were advised to stay with AEW until at least 2024, when the company would potentially have a larger budget if they come to terms on a better TV deal.
Per the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, former AEW EVP Cody Rhodes’ success since returning to WWE has ‘changed some minds’ who previously weren’t considering a jump to WWE:
“Up until recently, most AEW regulars and top stars privately were not talking about going to WWE. Some indicated never wanting to leave. Many, because of their size and the new direction of NXT, saw no future in it. Obviously the success of Cody Rhodes in WWE, plus his earning more money, has changed some minds.”
AEW President Tony Khan previously admitted that he’s anticipating more ‘free-agent movement’ both ways when more contracts expire. A number of notable AEW deals will come up in the next few years, including MJF’s.
Amidst all the ongoing MJF/AEW drama, more details have emerged on the star’s current salary compared to other top AEW stars.
