Rumored Roman Reigns Luchador Opponent For WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The “rumored” luchador challenger for Roman Reigns’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship has been revealed.

Roman Reigns and Rey Mysterio’s intriguing interaction at the end of the August 3 WWE Raw led to plenty of questions regarding ‘The OTC’ potentially making his first-ever appearance in AAA.

Today’s announcement from AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio confirmed otherwise however, as it was revealed that Reigns will instead be appearing on the September 14 episode of WWE Raw in Mexico City – and on the show, he will be putting his World Heavyweight Championship on the line.

Reigns’ challenger on September 14 will be determined by a tournament featuring the best luchadores from WWE and AAA, with the proceedings set to kick off on the August 10 episode of Raw in Norfolk, Virginia.

Following this announcement, Bryan Alvarez revealed who may potentially be in line to win the tournament and challenge Reigns on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live.

According to Alvarez, El Grande Americano is currently “rumored” to be Reigns’ luchador opponent in Mexico City, however, these plans are not yet “locked in”:

“I can tell you this. The rumored opponent – unconfirmed, not locked in – the rumored opponent is El Grande Americano. That can certainly change.”

El Grande Americano is set to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship at Night Two of TripleMania 34 in Mexico City on Sunday, September 13, with that show, like Raw the following night, taking place at Arena CDMX.

So, if Americano does get the nod to challenge Reigns, he could be potentially doing so as the reigning AAA Mega Champion.

Roman Reigns vs. El Grande Americano: An Unlikely Blockbuster Match For WWE In Mexico City

A year ago, Roman Reigns and El Grande Americano would likely never be mentioned in the same breath, with the former one of WWE’s all-time great main event characters and the latter a comedy act, at least outside of AAA.

That is not the case anymore however, as Americano has established himself as AAA’s top babyface star and gained the respect of even those who don’t tune into AAA by way of his match of the year against Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) back in May.

While WWE has hardly done a great job at presenting current AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio as a credible threat – case in point SummerSlam Sunday and his loss to Danhausen – El Grande Americano should be protected at all costs and elevated to a level where he doesn’t look out of place mixing it up with WWE’s main event stars.

Although it’s certainly very unlikely that Americano defeats Reigns, even the possibility of it happening will be enough to make the September 14 episode of Raw a must-see show.
