The recent episode of WWE Raw has given an indication as to the next opponent for the Intercontinental Championship held by Chad Gable.

With Rey Mysterio having established a tournament of luchadors to face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship, the AAA General Manager has also come to the attention of Chad Gable.

The August 10 episode of WWE Raw saw Penta defeat Laredo Kid in the first round of the World Heavyweight Championship Contendership Tournament, with Rey Mysterio backstage to congratulate the luchador on the success.

Their celebration was interrupted by WWE Intercontinental Champion Chad Gable, who had a proposition for Mysterio, saying:

“Rey, I’ve been wanting to talk to you actually. Everything that you’ve been doing in AAA as general manager, nothing short of amazing.

“I mean, this tournament you’re putting on, it’s going to go down as one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a long, long time.

“You’ve got me thinking. It would be my honor to defend this championship against the greatest luchador of all time, Rey Mysterio.

“What do you think?”

Rey would note that he might be the AAA general manager, but he’s “still got a lot in the tank”, accepting the offer, with Gable stating he would talk to Adam Pearce to make the match official.

Another General Manager Steps Into The Ring

Considering he was in action as recently as July 27, losing to Ethan Page on WWE Raw, it should come as little surprise that Rey Mysterio has plenty left in the proverbial tank.

This match follows on from Nick Aldis re-signing as SmackDown general manager to face GUNTHER at SummerSlam, being reinstated to the role by Triple H after the match.

For Mysterio, it’s unlikely he’s going to have to step down from his on-screen AAA role, a role he has held since May of this year, having competed on WWE programming since that announcement was made. A win would see him become a three-time WWE Intercontinental Champion in a career that has already seen him as a Grand Slam Champion.

When it comes to the current crop of on-screen authority figures, it just leaves WWE Raw general manager Adam Pearce and NXT GM Robert Stone as those who are yet to step back through the ropes. Pearce is no stranger to in-ring action, having last teamed with Braun Strowman to take on The Hurt Business (Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin) for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship back in March 2021. More recently, Robert Stone lost to Mike Santana on the December 4, 2025 episode of TNA iMPACT.

Whether WWE will pull the trigger and deliver on the Adam Pearce match remains to be seen, although speculation of an in-ring return was addressed by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter earlier this year, casting doubt on it happening.

That said, as with all things WWE, opportunities can emerge, plans do change, and stories that may seem to be “out there” could become a reality.
