WWE
WWE has filed the trademark on the ring name of a current SmackDown star ahead of their upcoming match on television.
After signing with WWE back in 2024, Giulia was a rare recent case of a free agent star coming over to WWE and keeping their ring name they used prior.
Giulia has continued to use that name in WWE on NXT and now on the main roster, with her set to face off against Blake Monroe in Blake’s debut match tomorrow night on SmackDown.
WWE Files Trademark On Giulia Ring Name
Ahead of the show, WWE has now officially filed the trademark for the ring name ‘Giulia’, per the USPTO.
The description for the filing reads:
IC 041: Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.
WWE Owned Ring Names Vs. Talent Name Recognition
In years past, WWE had previously brought established independent stars into the company with the ring names they had used outside of the company, with new names going to lesser established names and WWE Performance Center graduates.
However, in recent years, names like Giulia, Stephanie Vaquer and Jordynne Grace have become the exception to the rule, as almost all new signings are given new names in WWE, including previously established names from AEW television like Powerhouse Hobbs (Royce Keys), Ricky Starks (Ricky Saints) and Mariah May (Blake Monroe).
On one hand, it is good for the talent to be able to give themselves a fresh start in WWE, as well as potentially keep using their prior name should they leave the company.
However, WWE clearly wants to own everything that it can, so it sucks to see a lot of newly signed independent names being forced to undergo name changes.
