WWE Raw Preview, May 21, 2018 – Who Wants Three Weeks Of Filler?

It doesn’t matter what you answered to the question in the title, because that’s almost certainly all you’re going to get on Raw until the Money in the Bank (MitB) pay-per-view on June 17.

Think about it, only one space remains in the MitB men’s ladder match, and that’s being decided tomorrow night on SmackDown Live, so no reason to get too excited there.

In terms of the women’s match, two Raw spots still need to be filled, but they’re running out of people to have qualifying matches with.

One of those places, you would assume, will go to Ruby Riott, who, despite pointlessly losing a six-woman tag match last week, is the “leader” of the Riott Squad and it only makes sense for her to have a spot.

It doesn’t hurt that she’s one of Raw‘s most talented female performers. The second and final spot, again I’m assuming here, will probably go to Natalya, who picked up the win in the aforementioned tag match.

She’s also an experienced head that WWE will probably want in the match to keep things steady. The first MitB match last year was a bit sloppy, so they’ll need all the experience they can get in the match for this year to be an improvement.

Sticking with the women, last week we saw, in the most scripted and horrible segment in centuries, Nia Jax challenging Ronda Rousey for a Women’s Championship match at MitB.

This is a decision that has been heavily criticized, and not just because of the way it was announced. It will be Ronda’s second ever match on WWE TV. Before then she’s scheduled to compete at a few house shows, but seriously?

Where has the build been to this match? Does this mean one of them is going to have to turn heel? It would be suicide to turn Ronda heel right now, so if anyone it’s going to have to be Nia.

The problem with this, of course, is that she only turned face a few weeks ago, and you don’t want her to get a reputation of turning whenever it’s convenient.

They need to get Ronda wrestling on TV. The worst thing they can do is for her only two matches before coming champion to be the ‘Mania match and then the actual championship match itself.

We need to believe that she deserves the shot, rather than the more obvious reason being that she is a mainstream pull, and it’ll have the news outlets getting a bit more excited about WWE. It really feels like WWE is exposing itself as a company that only cares about money rather than entertainment.

And speaking of exposing… SEGUE!

Sami Zayn promised to expose Bobby Lashley after his horrible awful terrible rubbish interview with Renee Young two weeks ago. This, of course, means that Sami will be squashed in a match with Lashley, but Sami is so hot at the moment I’m going to just enjoy it while it lasts.

Knowing WWE, they’ll bring out three people who probably aren’t actually Bobby’s sisters, and have them talk about how mean Bobby was when he was little.

I don’t think anyone wants to see this, and with Sami’s promo skills you would hope if anyone can make it watchable it’s him, but we’ve seen that even the best promos can struggle when given horrible scripts – who remembers Alexa Bliss’ ‘this is your life’ promo?

Very little was keeping me interested in the Raw tag team division until last week, but now I’m hooked on it like a trout (other fish are also available).

The odd couple of Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler is one that very few people expected to succeed, but I think it’s safe to say many have been pleasantly surprised by the booking.

In a shock result, they actually beat Finn Bálor and Braun Strowman last week, and in doing so, set up future battles between Drew, Finn, and Braun – and if that doesn’t excite you, then you’re probably someone who doesn’t get excited very easily. Yeah. I said it.

Will they be next in line for a shot at the Raw tag titles which have been so uninspiringly held by Bray and Matt? I kind of hope so.

Or could it be the B-team? The newly named duo of Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas stole the show last week with their first ever win as a tag team, defeating the Fashion Police.

If there’s a way of getting yourself over with the crowd by being deliriously happy after winning one match, this is it. Also, picking a team name that sounds like an 80s TV show was a good choice too.

If they’re booked properly, they could soon become an incredibly popular tag team, something Raw has been lacking for some time. They deserve so much more than being a comedy jobber team, so hopefully, this is a sign of big things to come.

Two more things, and I will just bullet point them because they’re simple enough to explain.

  • Seth Rollins will have the match of the night in his Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge.
  • Roman and Jinder will either have a fight or one will cost the other a match.

Are you looking forward to Raw? Who do you think will be next to challenge Seth? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter here.
