Former Champion Only Found Out About WWE Title Win Plans Minutes Before Match

A former WWE star has revealed that they were only informed of a championship change “like 10 minutes before the match”.

Last year, on the July 11 episode of WWE SmackDown, The Street Profits lost the Tag Team Championship to Joe Gacy and Dexter Lumis of The Wyatts Sicks.

They would hold the titles until January of this year, losing them to Solo Sikoa & Tama Tonga of The MFT, with Wyatts Sicks being released in April.

When it comes to that championship win, the former Joe Gacy would reveal how late in the day they found out it was happening during an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, saying:

“(We knew) like 10 minutes before the match. I love Nashville. The crowd there’s great. So that was part of the day, I guess creative was trying to figure out what the ending was because maybe they didn’t fully decide we were going over yet.

“It was us and Street Profits; we had the match put together, it’s almost time, and we still don’t know what the finish is.

“Then the producer came in and was like, ‘Alright, this is what we’re doing.’ So then we had to hurry up and get the finish together, and then that’s when, in that time is when we basically found out, like, ‘Oh, we’re about to win the tag titles.'”

The star now known as Joseph Sawyer would also touch upon a potential reason why The Wyatts Sicks lost their momentum following their destructive debut in June 2024.

Last Minute Vs Long Term Planning

Perhaps the time was just right for The Wyatts Sicks to capture their first championship on that episode of SmackDown, with the decision being confirmed to the stars quite late in the day, according to Sawyer, and it was the plan all along.

It’s unlikely that more details will come on how and why the decision was made, particularly with the period of time already being covered in WWE Unreal and even more so with stars involved in the match no longer under contract.

While WWE creative no doubt have a grand plan for many of its storylines, particularly as they head from one major PLE to the next, John Cena has previously noted that there were “tons of pivots” in the direction of his retirement year story. This isn’t to say that such changes happen for all stars, but there’s an argument to be made that fan reaction can play its part in what is to come, as could a different direction emerging as the story develops.

Without immense fan reaction, WWE may not have seen the transition from the Divas Era to the Women’s Revolution. Over recent years, the vocal reaction to Dominik Mysterio no doubt played its part in the way that the star continues to be utilized. Even more recently, there are arguments to be made that Danhausen continues to be showcased due to the reaction fans have given him since his debut earlier this year.

A long-term plan may be a desirable element when it comes to setting the stage for what’s to come, but many aspects can get in the way of that vision, and fan reaction potentially plays a part in that.
