“When it comes crashing down and it hurts inside…” I’m sure we all recognize those immortal lines from one of the most iconic theme tunes in professional wrestling. If you don’t, then where were you in the late eighties and early nineties? They are of course the opening lines which accompanied Hulk Hogan to the ring.
Over the years, WWE and Hulk Hogan have had a rocky relationship, parting company and reuniting again on several occasions. After his last stint with the company – which saw him used to promote the WWE Network – was terminated following a racist comment on a leaked sex tape and his presence was eradicated from all WWE products, many believed and his detractors hoped that we would never see Hogan in a WWE ring again.
That seemingly all changed this past week when it was revealed that ‘the Hulkster’ and WWE may be in talks for the legend to return to the company. Then last night, Hulk Hogan and Triple H were pictured together at the premiere of HBO’s André the Giant documentary fueling suspicion that a deal was closer than we thought.
In order to cool the rumor mill and distance themselves from their former headline star, WWE released the following statement:
“Hulk Hogan is an important part of André the Giant’s history, however his appearance at tonight’s HBO premiere of the documentary and his plans to help others learns from his mistakes does not mean WWE is rehiring him. Hogan is not scheduled to be at any upcoming WWE events.”
If he were, of course, this would be the exact statement one would expect WWE to put out in order to attempt to keep his appearance secret. The next few weeks will tell whether the ‘Immortal’ one is back in the fold and until then we shall have to continue to speculate. All I will say is that SmackDown Live may need a new General Manager sooner than we think. Now, I wonder who could step into a non-active television role.
