In a triple announcement last night, WWE revealed that Luke Harper, Sin Cara and The Ascension had all been released from their contracts with immediate effect.
We knew already that Sin Cara and Harper at the very least wanted to leave the company, having requested their releases earlier this year, and as the Ascension hadn’t had a match in months, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were also keen to leave.
But why has this happened so suddenly? The latest reports were that WWE wasn’t going to be releasing anyone due to fear that they would simply jump ship to AEW.
Well, according to a Wrestling News source, the reason is largely financial.
“A WWE source told me that another reason why the company is more open to releasing some wrestlers is that it helps them cut down on salaries while freeing up more money to offer deals to mid and upper card wrestlers who they don’t want to leave the company.”
It makes sense really if the source is accurate, because by removing unused stars, they have even more funds to keep stars they actually have plans for.
Dave Meltzer confirmed on Wrestling Observer Radio that all four men will not be able to compete until March 8 due to their 90-day no compete clauses.
More releases are being rumoured, so stay turned to WrestleTalk.com for updates.
