Shingo Takagi has won the NEVER Openweight Championship from Hirooki Goto. The two battled in the main event of The New Beginning in Sapporo Night One with Takagi coming out on top.
The win marks the first singles championship for Takagi in New Japan Pro Wrestling. He had previously held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles with BUSHI and is currently holding the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championships with EVIL and BUSHI.
Takagi noted after the match that this title is only the beginning for him. He mentioned that the IWGP Heavyweight title is the number one title but the NEVER title is the only title. This appeared to be a tease of something to come with Tetsuya Naito.
Hirooki Goto had only won the title at Wrestle Kingdom 14, a mere 27-day reign. He had beaten KENTA to win the championship on January 5, this was his first attempt at defending the title.
