WWE has officially announced the WWE Championship match for the Extreme Rules pay-per-view event which takes place on July 19.
Drew McIntyre will defend against former tag team partner Dolph Ziggler, after Ziggler announced he’d been traded from SmackDown to the red brand during tonight’s episode of Raw.
Ziggler, along with his current tag team partner Robert Roode, have been drafted to Raw in exchange for new Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles going to opposite direction to SmackDown recently.
McIntyre opened Raw tonight, but was cut off by Ziggler who requested a WWE Title match at Extreme Rules which was later made official by WWE.
The two reigned as Raw Tag Team Champions in 2018 before splitting up towards the latter end of that year. McIntyre actually made his main roster comeback on April 16, 2018, after being moved from NXT following a months-long injury absence, as Ziggler’s partner.
The fact that Ziggler – who is off the back of a romance storyline with Otis and Mandy Rose in which he lost to Otis multiple times – has been moved to Raw and instantly gotten a title shot, really speaks to the lack of credible challengers WWE has built up for McIntyre.
