One of the keys for success for WWE and AEW is TV ratings, but it sounds like there are going to be some changes to those going forward.
As of right now, the 18-49 demographic rating has been the most important number in the ratings, and this is because advertisers want to target their adverts to those people.
This means, the higher a show’s 18-49 demographic viewership is, the more likely it is that advertisers are going to want to advertise during it, so the more money the TV station makes by selling adverts during said show.
Anyway, according to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there’s going to be a shift away from the traditional 18-49 being the most important TV rating number.
Going forward, according to someone in television advertising, it’ll be the “total impressions” a show gets that is the most important number.
This would seem to mean it would be based on the total number of viewers a show gets, including streaming numbers and on-demand numbers, rather than just the same-day 18-49 viewers.
This shift in mentality from advertisers is expected to begin in January, so it’s definitely something to watch out for and keep in mind when analysing the ratings going forward.
It has been said that sports are likely to benefit on the whole from this change.
