The public has voted, the votes have been tallied and AEW’s HOOK is the Rookie of the Year according to the latest issue of PWI.
The second-generation wrestler first appeared in AEW in 2020 and instantly resonated with fans and critics alike.
In the current issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated, the PWI Awards saw HOOK crowned the Rookie of the Year.
WWE producer Shane Helms called into question the result of the public vote, suggesting an alternative name for Rookie of the Year in a Tweet saying:
“With all due respect, how does anyone other than Logan Paul get Rookie of the Year for 2022? He had one of the best first years in the biz I’ve ever seen.”
Scott Yager of ChallengeMania would reply to Helms’ comment with:
“He had 3 matches. That would be the knock.”
Helms would back up his claim in a follow-up Tweet, stating:
“3 matches on the absolute biggest stages imaginable. And f’n killed!!! Utterly ridiculous to use that as a “knock.”
Logan Paul signed a WWE contract in June 2022 and would go on to perform at WrestleMania 38, teaming with The Miz only to be attacked by him post match, then at SummerSlam, defeating The Miz and finally at Crown Jewel failing in his bid to become WWE Universal Champion.
PWI would step into the debate, saying to Helms:
“You’d have to ask all the readers who voted for Hook in order to know for sure.”
Hurricane Helms would concur with HOOK is doing a good job, but wouldn’t shift on his opinion, concluding:
“Hook’s doing awesome, but no one had a first year like Logan. Not even close.”
HOOK’s father, Taz, would share his own thoughts on his son’s win, by Tweeting:
Very proud of this dude. 😎 pic.twitter.com/RqYLTjU6AF
