Following his appearances at the two-night WWE WrestleMania 42 event, it seems like fans will not have to wait too long before seeing John Cena once again.
Cena is now being advertised to appear at the upcoming WWE Backlash 2026 premium live event from Tampa, Florida.
‘The Never Seen 17’ could play a pivotal role in making this Backlash show a special one that will have a little more star power involved.
Here are six potential John Cena roles at WWE Backlash 2026.
6. Special Guest Host
At WWE WrestleMania 42, John Cena served as the special guest host for the two-night event from Las Vegas.
After retiring from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, it makes sense for WWE to use Cena in these non-wrestling roles.
Considering WWE Backlash 2026 will air the first hour live on ESPN 2 like Mania did, Cena could open the show as the host to bring a recognizable face for fans to see first.
Cena as a special guest host seems to be a go-to move to add just a bit of nostalgia and star power to premium live events.

John Cena has been at the forefront for a new paid subscription service named Club WWE.
The recently launched subscription service has seen Cena being the voice of the promotion behind this new entity within the company.
The 17-time WWE World Champion could be appearing at the upcoming PLE to simply make an announcement regarding the new service.
Whether it be a further expansion on the service or making it something bigger for the company, Cena announcing news for Club WWE makes a lot of sense with how involved he’s been in the promotion for it.
4. WWE Hall Of Fame Induction Announcement
In the past year, WWE has made a big deal about letting legendary stars know that they are heading into the Hall of Fame.
Back at WWE Wrestlepalooza 2025, The Undertaker appeared to tell Stephanie McMahon that she would be heading into the Hall of Fame the following year.
Meanwhile, the AJ Styles tribute show on the February 23 edition of Monday Night Raw saw Taker make another surprise appearance to let ‘The Phenomenal One’ know that he was also heading into the WWE Hall of Fame 2026.
With John Cena scheduled to make an appearance at WWE Backlash 2026, The Undertaker could also show up and announce that ‘The Never Seen 17’ will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for next year in Saudi Arabia.
3. Interaction With GUNTHER & Cody Rhodes
John Cena appearing as a special guest host on the WWE WrestleMania 42 two-night premium live events did not lead to any interactions with any of the top talent he feuded with last year.
After Cody Rhodes dethroned him for the Undisputed WWE Championship and GUNTHER ended his career, it was somewhat disappointing that Cena did not interact with either of these stars at Mania.
Then on the May 1 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, GUNTHER made a surprise appearance to attack Rhodes and laid him out with a sleeper before holding up the WWE Title.
GUNTHER and Rhodes interacting with Cena at Backlash could further develop this new feud over the top prize on Friday Night SmackDown.
Special Guest Referee For Danhausen & Mystery Partner vs. The Miz & Kit Wilson
At WWE WrestleMania 42 night two, The Miz and Kit Wilson interrupted John Cena looking to have their Mania moment.
However, Danhausen and a group of “Mini Danhausens” came out to interrupt, leading to some interaction with Cena as well.
Playing off this angle, this could lead to some exchanges between Cena and Danhausen for his next appearance.
Cena playing the role of special guest referee for Danhausen teaming with a mystery partner against The Miz and Wilson would make some sense and give him another notable non-wrestling role.
1. Coming Out Of Retirement To Team With Danhausen Against The Miz & Kit Wilson
WWE could go all the way with John Cena’s involvement at the upcoming Backlash 2026 premium live event.
On the May 1 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, The Miz looked to finally take Danhausen under his wing, but Kit Wilson stopped this from going down, giving ‘The A-Lister’ the choice between him and the ‘Very Nice, Very Evil’ star.
After it looked like Miz chose Danhausen, he then attacked the popular star from behind and laid him out alongside Kit. Later in the show, SmackDown GM Nick Aldis announced that Danhausen and a mystery partner will face Kit and Miz at WWE Backlash 2026.
Considering the endorsement he received from ‘The Never Seen 17,’Danhausen could call upon Cena to be his tag team partner against Miz and Kit, pushing him to come out of retirement to help him out at WWE Backlash 2026.
