AEW
An AEW star has admitted that the last few years have been “very difficult” for him, following lengthy periods of inactivity in the company.
After being one of the most consistent and successful performers on the AEW roster during the company’s first three years of existence between 2019-2022, Scorpio Sky spent the following three years barely featured on TV whatsoever.
Initially having his momentum derailed due to injury in June 2022, right when he was enjoying his second run as TNT Champion, Sky missed a year of action and wouldn’t return until the following July.
Sky wrestled only six times in 2023, with the 43-year-old proceeding to be absent between October 2023 and July 2025, when he returned to answer Max Caster’s Open Challenge on Collision.
During an appearance on the latest episode of Tagging in with Chris Harris, Sky opened up about his “frustrating” period of inactivity in AEW:
“It’s a really like a mind f, because on the surface it could be a lot worse. You’re sitting at home and getting paid, and there are people that don’t have a place to live and there are people that are struggling and living paycheck to paycheck and they’re working 60 hours a week and they’re barely able to make ends meet.
“So when you think about it on that scale it’s like ‘I can’t complain man.’ But then there’s other days when you’re just like ‘I grew up dreaming of doing this. I didn’t grow up dreaming of getting paid to not do it.’ It’s hard, you want to do it because you love it. Not only that but from the business side, you got to earn your next contract?
“It does get frustrating, especially when it’s out of your hands when it’s not due to injury. But, that’s the nature of the business and I think a lot of wrestlers have gone through it, not just myself. There’s a lot of talent in all the companies and you’re never going to get used as often as you’d like to be used. So, you just kind of have to roll with it and try to put yourself in the best situation that you can and be ready when your jersey number does get called.”

Sky was then asked if he was making pitches to creative during his time off TV, to which he answered:
“Not always, but yeah there are definitely times when I was making pitches and sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t. There’s obviously an ongoing plan for a lot of people and there’s only so much TV time. So, I think if it works and it’s something they love, then they’ll give it consideration, but sometimes it’s just out of sight out of mind, and if you’re not there, no offense to anybody, if you’re not there then they’ve got people that are there to worry about.
“Even if you wanna be there and you’re not there, the reality is you’re not there, and there are people that are there that they’re thinking about.”
While he has perspective that things could be a lot worse, Sky admitted that the past few years have been a very trying time for him:
“Again, it’s very very tough, it’s been a very difficult time honestly the last few years because I do feel like I’m still such a high level performer and I’m (at) a prime level and I think I can put on some great TV moments.
“But again, it’s just about being ready when your jersey number is called, and every time I had a hiatus I told myself I’m just going to get ready and I’m going to try and get in better shape.
“Whenever I do come back, I’m gonna come back in great shape and I’m gonna come back with a different look and I’m gonna come back really motivated and good. So, even if I wasn’t wrestling as much as I’d like to in the last few years, my body got a lot better, so there’s a plus.”

Thankfully for Sky, since returning to TV in one year ago, he has managed to compete consistently across AEW Collision and Ring of Honor TV as the leader of SkyFlight.
His future is somewhat uncertain heading into the second half of 2026 however, as a recent report indicated that the inaugural AEW World Tag Team Champion’s contract is due to expire in the next few months.
During the same conversation with Chris Harris, Sky addressed his contract situation – click here for full details.
