‘I Was Filtered, They Wanted Me To Act Like A Real Commentator’ – Booker T Addresses WWE Raw & SmackDown Commentary Stints, NXT Role Was Meant To Only Be For Three Months

Jamie has been covering the world of wrestling for four years and currently holds the position of Assistant Editor of WrestleTalk.com. During his time working for WrestleTalk.com he has written and published over 4,000 news and feature articles covering events and happenings from WWE, AEW, TNA and a variety of international and independent wrestling promotions.

Booker T has commented on his time working at the Raw and SmackDown commentary desks before eventually finding a home that he “loves” in WWE NXT.

In October 2022, Booker T began working at the WWE NXT commentary desk alongside Vic Joseph.

While WWE has made plenty of commentary team shake-ups since then, Booker and Vic have been the one constant, with the only change being the temporary addition of Corey Graves to their team early last year.

Before arriving at the WWE NXT commentary desk, Booker had performed in a number of roles, including being a panelist at WWE premium live events and working on commentary on Raw and SmackDown.

The two-time WWE Hall of Famer’s time on Raw and SmackDown didn’t last as long as his time in NXT has however, and during an appearance on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Booker explained why NXT is a better fit for him and his commentary style.

Booker said:

“For me, I know what my job is. I wouldn’t necessarily say I wasn’t that good at it, but I didn’t get a chance to be myself when I was on Raw and SmackDown. I was filtered, they wanted me to act like a real commentator. I’m not like a real commentator, I’m just going to go out and analyze the thing. I’m not a heel, I’m not a babyface or anything like that, I’m just gonna go out and add color.”

Booker continued, revealing that his move to WWE NXT was initially him just “filling in” and was only meant to last three months:

“I love it, man, being a part of NXT. That job literally was supposed to be for three months, I was just filling in. ‘Book, we need you to fill in for three months.’ I’m like ‘Alright, three months my ass. No way y’all going to be able to take this job away from me.'”

The former WWE Grand Slam Champion would then give props to Vic Joseph, saying that his NXT partner has made his job “so easy for him”:

“I must give props to my man Vic Joseph. Vic makes it so easy for me. He’s literally like the quarterback, he’ll throw me the play, and Vic and I both know the plays. I know exactly where he wants to go, when he wants me to go there.

“When something needs to get talked about from a business perspective, bang, Vic is going to be on point. He’s just made that job so easy for me, so I give Vic Joseph big props for putting me in the right position to succeed in NXT the way I have over the four years that job has lasted. Three months has turned into four years.”
