AEW star Buddy Matthews has provided an update on his injury recovery and return plans, last competing at Grand Slam Australia.

The February 15 AEW pay-per-view saw Buddy Matthews suffer an injury to his ankle that required a walking boot.

During an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Matthews opened up about the extent of his ankle injury, revealing that there was a partial ligament tear and cartilage damage, saying:

“Rolled it pretty bad. Had an X-ray, MRI. There was no break, but there was partial ligament tear and cartilage damage.

“(I’m) walking. I haven’t ran, I haven’t jumped, I’ve just started implementing cardio, but then it kind of stiffens up. And, you know, we’re working through it, but the docs was were telling me I’ve never seen an ankle roll that much under someone without completely destroying, smashing, disintegrating the bones.

“So I didn’t break a bone, which was incredible, but then I had to wrestle 15 minutes after it.”

Buddy Matthews would go on his honeymoon after suffering the injury, after not requiring surgery on his ankles, sporting crutches, braces and tape during that time period.

The AEW star also revealed that he plans to get back into the ring to work out what’s next, saying:

“I’m hoping sooner rather than later. I’m obviously gonna have to get in the ring and suss it out and get back in ring shape. But I’m hoping in the next couple of weeks, fingers crossed.”

During the interview, Buddy Matthews would also weigh up a potential return to WWE, which would see him work in the same company as Rhea Ripley.

Currently a member of the Hounds of Hell, Matthews was previously a member of the House of Black until the departure of Malakai Black.
