WWE Star Was ‘Late’ Addition To Recent Release List WWE

Originally being scheduled for a match at NXT No Mercy on September 30, Mustafa Ali was a ‘late’ addition to the WWE release list.

WWE’s President of Talent Development Creative Shawn Michaels recently addressed Ali’s release in the No Mercy media call, saying “I’d be lying to you if I said it didn’t take us by surprise.”

There were also reports that several people in the company were said to be unhappy with Ali’s release from WWE.

Ali was one of a number of WWE stars who were released from their contracts on Thursday, September 21, 2023, nine days after the UFC/Endeavor merger to form TKO.

Dave Meltzer has provided further details on Ali’s placing on that list in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing:

“Regarding Ali being on television and pushing him for a match with Dominik Mysterio on 9/30 and then cutting him, it was said that there were names on the bubble and names that were going to be cut.

“He was in the former category but the decision was made late to cut him.”

Dominik Mysterio was originally scheduled to face Ali at NXT No Mercy for the NXT North American Championship.

With Trick Williams now filling that spot, Ali has commented on the change in creative direction.

Ali has recently posted to social media revealing he will be taking international bookings on the independent scene.

Mustafa Ali is one of three names that have internal interest at IMPACT Wrestling, according to PCO.
