An update has emerged on a AAA star signed to a WWE contract following an injury that was recently suffered ahead of an NXT match.

As previously reported, El Hijo del Vikingo was set to defend the AAA Latin American Championship against EK Prosper on this week’s WWE NXT, only to suffer an injury during rehearsals.

PWInsider has now provided an update on the star’s status, confirming that Vikingo suffered a knee injury, with WWE “awaiting MRI results” to establish its severity.

As the report notes, Vikingo has been out of action previously, for “an extended period”, due to knee issues.

Promotion for the NXT match was removed by the WWE social media team, with a storyline reason being provided through a backstage attack on Vikingo at the hands of a lead pipe-wielding Keanu Carver. Prosper had beaten Carver on the June 30 episode of the Tuesday night show. Prosper would state that he attacked Vikingo as Prosper had robbed him of a title shot.

Although continuing to feature on AAA television, Vikingo is notable for being directly signed to a WWE contract.

Injured, But In Action

With the Fourth of July weekend approaching, WWE television is in a period of flux as this week’s episode of SmackDown is pre-taped as opposed to being broadcast live.

As a result of this change, SmackDown was taped on Monday, with WWE Raw being broadcast live, and Vikingo was announced to be facing Rey Fenix for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship.

In essence, this means that Vikingo’s SmackDown match was taped the day before he would suffer an injury that now sees him sidelined for an indeterminate period of time.

At the time of writing, it isn’t known how long Vikingo will be out of action or whether the previous knee injury will impact the recovery journey he has ahead, although WrestleTalk will provide further details as they emerge.

Following WWE’s acquisition of AAA, Vikingo would go on to lose the Mega Championship to Dominik Mysterio at World Collide in September 2025, a title that the Judgment Day member continues to hold.

This Friday’s match marks the first time the star has competed on WWE SmackDown since signing with the company.

WrestleTalk sends its best wishes to Ej Hijo del Vikingo for a timely return to action.
