The finals of the Best of the Super Juniors 29 round robin tournament have now been determined.
On Friday (June 3), Block A leader Hiromu Takahashi will go one-on-one with Block B leader El Desperado in the final match of the tournament.
Takahashi secured his place in the finals with a win over IWGP Jr Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori during today’s event. Both Takahashi and Ishimori finished with 12 points, but Takahashi had the tiebreaker in his favor.
Similarly, El Desperado and El Phantasmo ended the night with 12 points, with Desperado advancing after defeating Phantasmo on the final night of block action.
Some fans have already criticised the final match-up for lack of originality. Takahashi is looking to win the tournament an unprecedented four times in total, and an impressive three times back-to-back, following tournament wins in 2018, 2020 and 2021. Takahashi actually defeated El Desperado to win the 2020 iteration of the tournament.
After winning the 2021 tournament, Takahashi unsuccessfully challenged for El Desperado’s IWGP Jr Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 16 in January. El Desperado lost the gold to Taiji Ishimori at Wrestling Dontaku in May, weeks before the beginning of the tournament.
