Alba Fyre has confirmed that her WWE departure was the result of her contract expiring and not being released.
On April 24, a number of WWE stars were reported as being released from their contracts, with Alba Fyre being among the names.
In a Daily Star interview to coincide with her return to EVE: Women of Wrestling in London, England, the star known once more as Kay Lee Ray has revealed that her WWE contract expired, leading to her being able to compete on the independent show, saying:
“It happens. There seems to be a pattern with this. My contract was up, and I knew it was coming up, and I had the decision of whether I wanted to stay or not.
“I know some people got fired and they have the 90-day clause, but because mine was just a contract ending, it means I didn’t have the 90 days, and I was able to come and do this and do it as a kind of surprise, even though I know it wasn’t really a surprise. But yeah, really glad it worked out this way.”

Kay Lee Ray made her in-ring return at EVE 150: History Makers/Rule Breakers on June 5 in London, England, defeating Molly Spartan.
With that match now in the record books, Kay Lee Ray shared her thoughts on making an independent wrestling return at EVE, saying:
“You know what? Amazing. It’s good to get back in, back in with somebody that I’ve known for a long time but never got to wrestle. Wrestling Molly is one I’ve been wanting to do for a while and I’m really glad to get that done.”

The star would also reveal that she’s “back to it” when it comes to wrestling on the independent scene, stating:
“We are back to it. I’m sure now you’re gonna start seeing things appearing, I’ve been speaking to a few people, so some things are going to be going out, but I’m kind of keeping that to myself, (you’ll) see more in the future.”

Her final match in WWE saw Alba Fyre face NXT Women’s North American Champion Tatum Paxley at WWE World At WrestleMania 42, an untelevised show ahead of the two-night Premium Live Event.
The Road Ahead For Kay Lee Ray
Signed to a WWE contract in January 2019, Kay Lee Ray was no stranger to the company, having competed at an NXT taping back in 2015 and then in the Mae Young Classic two years later.
Initially appearing on NXT UK programming, the star would transition stateside in August 2021, before being repackaged as Alba Fyre the following year. One-half of The Unholy Union with Isla Dawn, she would be called up to the main roster in May 2023.
Dawn would be the first to part ways with WWE, with her release in February of last year, seeing Fyre become a member of The Green Regime the following month, allying her with Chelsea Green and Piper Niven. With the latter sidelined through injury, Fyre would continue to compete, teaming with Green.
A former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion and NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion, Alba Fyre returns to the independent scene at just thirty-three years of age.
A seasoned professional, she joined WWE, having already competed in TNA Wrestling, while being a prominent star in ICW and Pro-Wrestling EVE, with championship reigns on her record. Kay Lee Ray would also compete over in Stardom and Shimmer, adding an international flavor to her time as an independent star.
Her enthusiasm for her craft can be heard through her interview with the Daily Star, and there’s no doubt that there are many more opportunities in the future of KLR.
Whether that future will be on the independent scene or a contract in another major company remains to be seen.
