Chris Jericho has revealed the inspiration behind his name change to simply ‘Jericho’ following his return to AEW television.
On the April 1 episode of AEW Dynamite in Winnipeg, Chris Jericho made his return to AEW television after almost a year away.
Upon his return, fans noticed that he was referred to on commentary as simply ‘Jericho’, with graphics and ring announcer Justin Roberts also doing the same in the following weeks, confirming that he would use just ‘Jericho’ as his name for this run.
Speaking to Ringer Wrestling, Jericho was asked what his favorite iteration of his character is, with him noting that he always says his favorite is his current version.
He then opened up on the inspiration behind the change to just ‘Jericho’, comparing it to a self-titled album.
He said:
“Whenever I get asked (what his favorite version of his character is), I always say the current version, because if I didn’t then it’d be like ‘what am I doing’.
“I like the idea of what I’m doing now with ‘Jericho’, and by not using that first name a lot, it created this whole intrigue online like ‘what’s he doing? What’s the reason?’
“Honestly, it’s like a self-titled album, that’s where I got the idea from. I could create a dozen other nicknames, but how many more do I need? Everyone knows who Jericho is, and when you hear that name, then you can remember whatever memories you have on your own.
“So it really is like Metallica The Black Album, you know who Metallica is, you know what’s going on. The Beatles The White Album, same thing. That’s kind of what the idea is for the ‘Jericho’ era, and I like it, I like what’s been going on and going with the flow, seeing what’s working and what’s not.”

Chris Jericho Names ‘The Wizard’ As An Underrated Jericho Era
Jericho has had many characters throughout his legendary career, with some being held in higher regard to fans than others.
When asked about an underrated era of his career, Jericho named his AEW run as ‘The Wizard’, and how he had to get a real magician’s license in Nevada in order to throw a fireball.
He said:
“When you’re going through underrated Jericho eras, I think the Wizard was pretty cool, when I started throwing fireballs, that was something nobody had seen for years in pro wrestling.
“I thought that was really cool to where we were in Vegas and I had to get a magician’s license for real to throw a fireball because that’s the rules the commission has, which I still renew every year and carry with me at all times.
“So yes, I am a licensed magician in Nevada.”
