Kevin Owens has opened up about his WWE career potentially being over before he made his return at SummerSlam tonight.

Owens returned in the opening match, which was set to be Sami Zayn vs Finn Balor but ended up being a four-way between Zayn, Balor, GUNTHER and Owens.

Owens picked up the win and in turn became #1 contender for the CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship.

It was Owens’ first match since March 2025 due to a career threatening broken neck injury that took him out of action.

Appearing on the official WWE SummerSlam post-show, he opened up about his recovery, saying:

“There was a moment I thought it wasn’t going to happen, and I did not make peace with it. I was not ready.

“I had such a great group of people around me helping me get through it; my wife, my kids, my friends, the WWE medical staff, even (Big E).

“Up to a month ago I was like ‘this may be it’. We kept doing scans, it kept not showing what we were hoping for, then I was like ‘well maybe it’s not gonna happen’.

“Then a couple of weeks ago and they said ‘we finally saw what we needed to see, you can get back in the ring’ and from there, here I am.”

Kevin Owens Shares Love For AEW Star Rebel

Also on the post-show, Kevin Owens spoke about how he drew inspiration from AEW star Rebel and her battle with ALS, saying:

“When things weren’t looking great, I looked around me at what could help me get through the tough times. There’s somebody called Tanea Brooks, who is known to wrestling fans as Rebel. She hasn’t wrestled here, but some things are bigger than wrestling.

“She’s currently battling ALS and the way she’s doing it is so incredible. I looked at her and what she’s going through and how she’s doing it, it’s truly inspirational.”
