There’s been a bit of an update on rumors that there could be some WWE releases, or at least cuts of some kind, coming soon.
A rumor started last week from WrestlingNews.co that there were talent and staff in WWE who “are expecting releases soon”, but there hasn’t really been any concrete news.
Dave Meltzer did allude to cuts in the last Wrestling Observer Newsletter, but that was more about costs being cut for WrestleMania specifically to make it as profitable as possible, such as having international announcers call the show remotely rather than the company paying for them to travel to the show.
In another update, Fightful Select provided a note from backstage at SmackDown this past Friday (March 17).
According to Fightful, there was “no talk” of backstage cuts at the show and it “wasn’t a big topic of conversation” based on what Fightful’s sources said.
We will of course keep you updated if there’s any further news or clarification on whether there’s actually something more to this story or not.
The last WWE release in terms of a wrestler was Mandy Rose in December which was obviously an exceptional circumstance, while the last “round” of releases was November which was a handful of NXT trainees, the most notable being Chase U’s Bodhi Hayward.
If we’re talking about the main roster, the last “round” of releases was November 2021, and several of those names are back with the company now.
