Former WWE Star Kaitlyn Teases Having ‘Unfinished Business’ With AJ Lee While Discussing Potential Return WWE

With AJ Lee back in the WWE fold, former rival and fellow Divas Champion Kaitlyn has stated she has ‘unfinished business’ with the star.

AJ Lee had been absent from WWE for a decade ahead of her return in September 2025, with the star going on to hold the Women’s Intercontinental Champion, and losing the title to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 42.

The return of AJ Lee to WWE has seen former star Kaitlyn comment on this comeback, when asked about a potential return of her own.

During an appearance on the Sirius XM Sports Twitter feed, in which former stars were asked who they would face in one more match, Kaitlyn said:

“AJ has come back, my social media has never been so blown up over a comeback, and I feel like we have unfinished business.”

A rivalry dating back to 2010, they would continue into WWE after the rebranding of the FCW developmental territory as NXT in 2012.

The Clash of the Champions episode of NXT in March 2013 saw Kaitlyn retain the WWE Divas Championship against AJ Lee, with their rivalry continuing on the main roster.

It would be AJ Lee who would defeat Kaitlyn for the Divas Championship at the June 2013 WWE Payback event, with their last encounter being a victory for Lee on Main Event in January the following year.

Kaitlyn parted ways with WWE in January 2014 but would briefly return for the Mae Young Classic four years later.

Nostalgia Sells

If the annual WWE Hall of Fame tells us anything, it’s that nostalgia sells. Alongside the induction of Stephanie McMahon and AJ Styles, this year’s ceremony saw the induction of former WWF Tag Team Champions Demolition, WCW star and WWF Champion Sid (Sid Justice/Vicious or Sycho Sid, depending on period), and Bad News Brown, among others.

Beyond that, fans witnessed the return of a number of past stars during John Cena’s retirement year, with Matt Cardona appearing as Zack Ryder before re-signing with the WWE under the real-life name under which he had seen success on the independent wrestling scene following his release in 2020.

The year to date has also played with nostalgia, not just with the return of Paige, but with the reunion of The Bella Twins, being among the moments that have harked back to past glories in WWE. It’s not a bad thing, particularly considering the age of the competitors involved. Brie and Nikki Bella are 42, a decade that Charlotte Flair recently called “new territory“, while Paige is just 33. There are a number of current WWE stars who are older than The Bella Twins and Paige who are still performing at the top level.

When AJ Lee made her return last year after a decade of absence, she had been away from the company longer than she had actually been in it, having signed her developmental deal in May 2009 and retired in April 2015. This didn’t dampen the reaction to her return, nor the love she has still been shown by the fans.

AJ Lee may no longer be the Women’s Intercontinental Champion, but there are still plenty of avenues to explore for the star outside of that title picture. Perhaps a nostalgia-laden trip through yesteryear could make an interesting diversion before she seeks to recapture the gold.
