WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella has recalled suffering the ankle injury that kept her out of WrestleMania 42 ’30 seconds’ into a match.
Nikki Bella was set to team with her sister Brie Bella at WWE WrestleMania 42 in the Women’s Tag Team Championship match, which didn’t end up happening after an injury suffered to Nikki.
Nikki suffered an ankle injury during her and Brie’s match with Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss on the March 27 episode of SmackDown, which led to Paige making her WWE return and replacing Nikki in the match.
Nikki Bella Says She ‘Had To Push Through’ Injury On WWE SmackDown
Speaking on the Nikki and Brie Show, Nikki recalled the injury, and how it happened 30 seconds into the match.
She said:
“So that tag match, we were in Pittsburgh. Brie and I vs Charlotte and Lexi (Alexa Bliss).
“What was crazy is that I literally hurt myself probably what, the first 30 seconds of the match? I definitely knew something happened when Charlotte and I were in the ring, definitely immediately I was like ‘Oh, I broke my ankle. I definitely think I just broke my ankle’. When I tagged out to Brie, I told Brie, and then Lexi, I’m like ‘You guys, I broke my ankle.’ They both were like ‘What? Get out!’
“But this is the people pleaser in me, I knew the WrestleMania storyline was starting that night. I knew obviously Bayley and Lyra (Valkyria) were in the back, I have the girls ringside and I’m like, ‘I can’t ruin this for everyone. If I stop, that means nothing is going to happen tonight. I have to push through.’
“That was what I was thinking inside. I put Brie and Lexi through a lot in that match, I was in an insane amount of pain.”

Nia Jax Helped Nikki Bella Following WWE SmackDown Injury
Nikki would continue on, noting that Nia Jax helped her out after the match when she told her about her injury.
She said:
“What I want to clear up, because at first Nia had gotten a lot of heat online, she actually helped me.
“When it came to the end of the match and the girls had to take us out, I knew at that point I couldn’t even put weight on my foot. I was in so much pain, I was like ‘Oh gosh, this is really bad.’
“I knew what was about to happen, so when she came to take me out, I looked at her and I go ‘Please no, my foot hurts so bad.’ She goes ‘Wait, what?’ I’m like ‘I can’t get thrown out, I need to step out.’
“So she helped me step out, but people made out like she injured me. No, Nia actually really helped me in that moment.”
