WWE Intercontinental Champion Chad Gable has praised Rey Mysterio following their match on last night’s episode of Raw.
Having defeated Penta at SummerSlam to become WWE Intercontinental Champion, Chad Gable recently offered Rey Mysterio a match for the title.
That match would take place on the August 17 episode of WWE Raw, with Gable retaining the championship against the Hall of Famer and AAA general manager.
In the wake of the match, Gable took to Instagram to share his thoughts on facing the legendary star, writing:
“Last night I had the honor of defending the Intercontinental Championship against one of the greatest Professional Wrestlers of all time.
“But what’s more astonishing to me than Rey’s continued ability to perform at the level he did last night at this point in his career — is the fact that a guy with his list of accomplishments in this business can be as genuinely humble, gracious, and grounded as he is.
“Rey Mysterio is truly a human being like no other I’ve ever met. All class.
“Our encounter was, and is, everything I love about Pro Wrestling.
“I felt alive.
“Thank you, @619iamlucha”
Following his SummerSlam victory, Gable opened up about his relationship with his former tag team partner, Jason Jordan, who now serves as a producer in WWE.
Absent Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Signed to WWE since November 2013, Chad Gable came from an amateur wrestling background and has shown the range to be both intensely intimidating and lighthearted during his run to date.
Despite the work he demonstrated as a star, outside of the Tag Team Championships in NXT, Raw & SmackDown, singles titles have been thin on the ground for Gable, save for the WWE Speed Championship.
The WWE Intercontinental Championship, however, came off the back of a feud as The Original El Grande Americano, taking on the star who had replaced him in donning the mask over in AAA. That replacement came as the result of an injury that would sideline him from June 2025 until this year’s Royal Rumble.
It was that return, as The Original El Grande Americano, that set Gable on a new path, leading to a mask vs. mask match that was near universally praised. Gable has credited The Undertaker and Jeremy Borash, both producers in AAA, for helping him cut loose during his run in the Mexico-based company, a new aspect to his mindset that he has no doubt brought over to the main roster.
Gable as WWE Intercontinental Champion is a breath of fresh air for the star, yet there will hopefully be opportunities for him to compete for one of the top titles as a result of all that has gone before.
