Cody (Rhodes) has defeated Nick Aldis to win his first ever NWA Worlds Championship, emulating his father, the late great Dusty Rhodes in the process.
In a match that looked to be finishing early after referee Earl Hebner put up the cross sign with his arms, suggesting Cody could not continue, the American Nightmare made history by winning the prestigious belt.
Cody refused to go down easily, re-emerging from underneath the time-keeper’s table with a cut above his eye that hadn’t been there before…I wonder what he found under the table.
The match looked to be over on several occasions, but it was Cody that prevailed, hooking both of Aldis’ legs for a surprise pinfall victory. The method of winning was a brilliant tribute to his father, who won the NWA Championship himself in August 1979.
It was a true feel-good moment all round, which was capped off by several of Dusty’s friends, including DDP and Tommy Dreamer, celebrating with Cody. DDP had earlier come to the ring to help Cody by fighting off Shawn Daivari with a diamond-cutter.
Congratulations to Cody on this victory and for the organisation of ALL IN. It really was an incredible night.
Bring on ALL IN 2.
