A new report has revealed the original plan for the WWE Championship match at Day 1, before the addition of Brock Lesnar to the bout.
The Beast was added to the WWE Title bout on the day of WWE Day 1, after Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19. The Beast ultimately pinned former champion Big E to win the gold.
A now-deleted WWE graphic indicated that Big E was set to retain his title before late changes were made to the bout. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer (via Sports Illustrated) has since revealed that the original plan for the WWE Championship was for Seth Rollins to win the title:
“The original scripted plan for the show was for Big E to lose the championship, but to Seth Rollins, who had tested positive for COVID-19 last week, and the champion instead lost his title to Lesnar as the result of another positive test.”
Following the title change, reports have stated that WWE haven’t changed WrestleMania plans for Reigns and Lesnar, nor have they nixed the original plans for the WWE and Universal Title matches set for the April 2-3 event.
Bobby Lashley will challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble later this month.
The WWE Championship five-way was reportedly produced by Jamie Noble. You can read the full list of backstage producers for matches at WWE Day 1 at this link.
