10 WWE Royal Rumble Title Matches You Have To Watch

4. CM Punk vs. The Rock – 2013

Royal Rumble 2013 marked the 434th day of CM Punk’s historic WWE Championship reign. Prior to January 27, 2013, The Rock hadn’t competed in a title match for almost 11 years.

When this match started though, numbers didn’t matter. The electric atmosphere could be felt through the screen, as Punk and The Rock abandoned the collar and elbow tie-up in favour of brawling.

After being attacked by Punk at Raw 1000 the previous summer, The ‘Brahma Bull’ was eager to seek revenge. Not willing to share his spotlight with a “sell-out”, the WWE Champion wanted to embarrass The Rock, leading to a contest of one-upmanship.

With the looming threat of a Shield ambush, and Heyman in Punk’s corner, The Rock headed into this bout outnumbered. The’ Great One’ didn’t back down, but instead showed the world that he was still willing to take on the world.

A great finale to Punk’s historic title reign with a big fight feel, this contest needs to be revisited by fans of both CM Punk and The Rock.

3. Ronda Rousey vs. Sasha Banks – 2019

At Royal Rumble 2018, Ronda Rousey made her first appearance for WWE, confronting Charlotte Flair and Asuka. A year later, Rousey had been Raw Women’s Champion for five months.

Entering 2019, the ‘Baddest Woman on the Planet’ was used to destroying her opponents in minutes. When Sasha Banks challenged Rousey at Royal Rumble, the former UFC Bantamweight Champion got to showcase her grappling skills.

Arguably the best title defence during Rousey’s Reign, the ‘Legit Boss’ matched the former UFC star hold for hold. It was rare for an opponent to survive, let alone thrive, against Rousey.

Sasha had a very dominant showing, demonstrating that her ‘Boss’ moniker was well deserved. Ultimately, Rousey punched her ticket to WrestleMania, outwrestling the Horsewoman for the victory.

If Rousey wasn’t already a hot commodity before arriving in WWE, this would’ve been known as her star-making performance.
