AEW Is Assembling The Strongest Tag Team Division In Wrestling

When AEW launched back in 2019, one of the key selling points of the company was a renewed focus on tag team wrestling during what was a down period of tag teams in North America.

For as long as I can remember, WWE has barely put any time or effort into it’s tag team divisions, with the current sets of champions being two rather thrown together alliances.

AEW however has almost too many teams to count, with an embarrassment of riches at Tony Khan’s disposal to create a potential new boom for tag team wrestling.

After what was a dry period for the division last year, AEW is now beginning to assemble the greatest tag team roster in wrestling today.

Adam Copeland & Christian Cage

 

When Adam Copeland signed with AEW back in 2023, many fans were waiting for his eventual reunion with Christian Cage in the company.

Last year’s All In event began the start of their reunion, with Christian being betrayed by the Patriarchy before Copeland told him to ‘go find himself’.

A year later, and Cope and Cage are now finally tag team champions once again as part of what will likely be their final run together.

Adding some legendary star power to the division, Cope and Cage are set to defend the titles at this year’s All In show.

The Young Bucks

With two of AEW’s Executive Vice Presidents being arguably the greatest tag team of the modern era, it’s no surprise to see the division thriving in the company.

Nick and Matt Jackson are set to challenge Cope and Cage for the titles at AEW All In London as they look to become record-breaking four-time AEW World Tag Team Champions.

The Bucks have done it all in AEW thus far, but there are set to be a number of new faces in the division we could see them face off with soon…

Motor City Machine Guns

WWE releasing one of the most influential tag teams of the modern era back in April basically confirmed that the company’s interest in reviving it’s tag team division was dead.

While their run in WWE was brief, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin were part of the peak of the SmackDown Tag Team division in 2025, taking part in two TLC matches, one on the SmackDown after WrestleMania with DIY and the Street Profits, and another at SummerSlam also featuring Fraxiom, the Wyatt Sicks and Andrade & Rey Fenix.

Now, the Motor City Machine Guns are part of the AEW roster, and them signing with the company was a no brainer as one of the greatest tag teams to ever do it.

Generational dream matches wait for MCMG going forward in a division that knows what it has in the duo.

FTR

FTR are currently tied with the Young Bucks as three-time AEW World Tag Team Champions.

Coming into AEW back in 2020 after they requested their WWE releases, FTR have further cemented their legacy as one of the greatest tag teams of the past decade.

Winning Tag Team Championship gold literally everywhere they go, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler are AEW Hall of Fame candidates when the time comes for Tony Khan to open the Hall.

FTR are currently off television, but when they return, their presence will add even more power to an already stacked division.

The Rascalz

An exciting recent addition to the AEW Tag Team division is the Rascalz, as Desmond Xavier, Zachary Wentz and Myron Reed continue to show out on Dynamite and Collision.

Signing with AEW after their TNA departures back in January, the Rascalz are a perfect fit for the division, bringing that highflying explosive offence to a division the likes only seen by the Young Bucks before them.

While we are still in the early days of the Rascalz’s AEW run, they will surely be big players in the future, regardless of which pairing competes in the matches.

Brodido

Some of the greatest tag teams in wrestling history started out as two singles stars that were thrown together at a time when they had nothing going on as singles stars.

Brodido is arguably AEW’s biggest ‘Frankenteam’ success story, with the pairing instantly clicking the second they were put together last year.

Brody King and Bandido captured the AEW World Tag Team Championship at last year’s Forbidden Door event in London, and currently reign as 2/3 of the AEW World Trios Champions alongside Hangman Adam Page.

While they are currently on Trios duty, Brodido returning to the tag division when the time comes will be exciting.

New Day

While not yet officially signed, it seems pretty clear that we are going to see Austin Creed and Kofi join the AEW roster very soon.

Leaving WWE back in April, the New Day held 10 Tag Team Championships together in WWE, with the company themselves even naming them the greatest tag team in history years ago.

New Day’s heel run was incredibly mismanaged by WWE creative in 2025, with a change of scenery for the pair a rather exciting prospect to think about.

Dream matches with the Young Bucks, Cope & Cage and more await for the New Day, an addition that will make AEW’s tag team division unstoppable.
