On May 4, John Cena announced that he would be appearing on the WWE Backlash 2026 premium live event.

Unlike his hosting duties at WrestleMania 42, Cena stated that he would be appearing to reveal some “history-making news.”

With some fans wondering what this news could be, there are some intriguing announcements that could be revealed to the audience in Tampa on May 9.

Here are six potential options for John Cena’s “history-making” announcement at WWE Backlash 2026.

6. Expansion Of Club WWE

WWE has recently introduced something to provide fans a greater involvement in the company.

Club WWE is a new paid subscription service that is dedicated to evolving the fan experience for their audience moving forward.

In the promotion for this new service, John Cena has become the voice behind explaining what Club WWE has to offer.

A further expansion of Club WWE could mean getting more access to programming, the stars and more opportunities to gain even more from the experience the company has to offer, which could be Cena’s announcement at Backlash 2026.

5. WWE’s Entire Tape Library Available On Netflix

WWE has undergone some changes in regards to where the company can be watched over the past year.

WWE Raw moved to Netflix along with access to the pay-per-view and premium live event library. Meanwhile, the company moved their live PLEs from Peacock to ESPN Unlimited.

More recently, the company’s tape library was also transitioned off of the Peacock app, but the company has not yet announced a new home for the older episodes of Monday Night Raw, SmackDown, NXT, WCW and ECW programming.

Cena announcing that Netflix will become the new hub for the extensive tape library owned by WWE would be game-changing news that would expand the relationship with the streaming service.

4. A New WWE-Dedicated Show On ESPN

Over the past few months, fans have seen WWE become a presence on ESPN programming.

Whether it be stars appearing on First Take or the network’s coverage of WWE PLEs, the move to ESPN Unlimited has caused a more closely tied bond between the two entities.

While they receive coverage on mainline content on the channels, WWE could join the likes of the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL in getting a single dedicated show for the company.

A new WWE-dedicated weekly or even daily show would be some noteworthy news that feels like something Cena and the company would feel is “history-making.”

3. John Cena Will Host Every Single WWE PLE

In 2025, John Cena announced that he had signed a new ambassador contract with WWE ahead of his in-ring retirement.

However, Cena made his return as the special guest host for the two-night WrestleMania 42 event.

‘The Never Seen 17’ brings star power to any show he appears on and may be an easy way for WWE to bring more intrigue to their major events.

Cena coming to WWE Backlash 2026 to announce that he is the official host of every PLE would be interesting and lead to him being regularly involved in the biggest shows of the year.

2. WrestleMania 44 Coming To London, England

Back at WWE Money In The Bank 2023, John Cena made a surprise appearance at the event and brought an interesting proposition.

With the event taking place from London, England, Cena brought the possibility of WWE holding a WrestleMania in the country.

Over the past three years, there have been discussions regarding WWE bringing ‘The Show of Shows’ to England at some point in the future.

Since this tease is still talked about to this day, Cena would be a fitting individual to make things official and announce that WrestleMania 44 in 2027 will take place from London, England at WWE Backlash 2026.

1. “One Night Only” In-Ring Return

2025 was focused around the retirement tour of John Cena, concluding his 23 year run with the company as an in-ring competitor.

Cena would go on to turn heel for the first time in 20 years, win his record-breaking 17th world title and put on some instant classics as well as final memorable moments over that 12-month period.

In December, Cena had his final match being submitted by GUNTHER at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Despite this legendary retirement, Cena could make history at WWE Backlash 2026 by announcing that he will one last match for one night only sometime this year.
