Retired WWE Championship To Be Brought Back

There is one specific retired WWE championship that could and should be revived soon for a multitude of reasons.

Last night’s episode of NXT saw both the Men’s and Women’s Speed Championships ruled defunct as Zaria chose the NXT Women’s North American Title over the Speed Title after unifying them.

WWE NXT General Manager Robert Stone decided that the Women’s title being made defunct meant the Men’s should suffer the same fate, so he stripped Lexis King of the Men’s Speed Championship too, retiring both versions of the title.

This does clear out the state of the champions in NXT and WWE as a whole, and everything looks pretty symmetrical between the men and the women, as well as the main roster and NXT, with the exception of one glaring omission.

Looking at the main roster to start with, both the men and the women have a WWE Title, a World Title, an Intercontinental Title and a United States Title, after the latter two were introduced for the women over the last year.

The Tag Team Title picture is weighted towards the men, as there are separate titles for Raw and SmackDown, while the women only have one Tag Team Title across both brands.

With the state of the men’s WWE tag team division right now, there could absolutely be an argument that the way to even this out isn’t to introduce separate titles for the women – as that would certainly feel like overkill – but rather to only have one set of men’s champions across both brands, as was the case for many years.

The key thing here though is there is one championship missing that would even things out on both the men’s/women’s front and the main roster/NXT front, and that championship is the NXT Women’s Tag Team Title.

In play for two years, the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship ended up retired when Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler unified it with the main roster Women’s Tag Team Championship by defeating Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn.

Since then, technically, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship has been defended on all three brands, but any time it’s defended in NXT, it’s really just for a one-off occasion a couple of times per year – it is very much a main roster championship, and NXT should have a dedicated version.

*Cora Jade vacated her half of the championship on July 19, 2022. Roxanne Perez remained the sole recognized champion for 7 additional days before officially vacating the titles on July 26, 2022.

Potential New NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions

As has been pointed out by fans and pundits for a long time now, as well as even by Triple H and Grayson Waller on WWE programming, the NXT women’s division has been outperforming the men’s, which makes it even more baffling that the men have an extra championship to play for.

Here are a few duos that could become holders of the NXT Women’s Tag Title if it does end up being reintroduced.

Kendal Grey & Wren Sinclair

It’s been a rough week for Kendal Grey and Wren Sinclair – collectively known as the WrenQCC, a play on NQCC (No Quarter Catch Crew), the faction they emerged from – as Grey lost her NXT Women’s Championship and Sinclair lost the Women’s Speed Title.

During last night’s WWE NXT, it was announced that Grey will be out of action for a while due to suffering vertigo in her match against Kelani Jordan this past weekend.

There might not be many better ways for her to return than the WrenQCC entering a tournament to determine new NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions.

Arianna Grace & Xia Brookside

A wildcard pick as it’s a team that isn’t actually together as of right now could be Arianna Grace and TNA Knockouts World Champion Xia Brookside.

Grace has often gone back and forth between TNA and NXT so there’s plenty of reason to believe she could put a deal together with Brookside for them to team up.

Brookside also fits into the Birthright stable as a second female member as the daughter of Robby Brookside, and could be one of the best bets of the current TNA roster to make the same move to WWE as the likes of Joe Hendry, Jordynne Grace and Cruz Montana.

Nikkita Lyons & Sloane Jacobs

Before this past Sunday, Nikkita Lyons and Karmen Petrovic would have been one of the top picks for a potential new NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship pairing.

However, at WWE NXT Heatwave, Petrovic walked out on Lyons and Nattie to concentrate on her AAA alliance with Los Perros Del Mal.

Evolve Women’s Champion Lyons does have another ally though, as she’s been partnered up with Sloane Jacobs on Evolve for a few months now.

Jacobs, no stranger to NXT TV having been around in 2022 as a teenager before rejoining as part of the WWE ID program more recently, this could be the way to bring her back to TV while at the same time positioning Lyons as a leader to potentially build a group around.
