John Cena has revealed that his WWE WrestleMania 34 storyline with The Undertaker was originally his idea, explaining how the bout came to be.
After failing to win the 2018 Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches, John Cena called out The Undertaker as a last resort to get on the WrestleMania 34 card.
With the Deadman not answering Cena’s call ahead of April 8, 2018, Cena started the show in the crowd, before later appearing in the ring for an “impromptu” match against Undertaker, who dispatched Cena in a matter of minutes.
Speaking during the Six Feet Under live podcast at WWE World, John Cena explained the thought process behind this storyline, stating:
“It’s a creative narrative that allows the winner of the Rumble to go forward as planned, I don’t have to steal anybody’s shot. The winner of the Chamber to go forward as planned, I don’t have to steal anybody’s shot.
“Then I can say, the only way I can do this, is by doing something really stupid and kicking a big hornet’s nest, should I do it?
“That’s when you (Undertaker) are sitting at home, the crowd is like ‘Yeah, you should!’ and you’re like ‘Ah s**t, now I’ve got to go to work.'”

Undertaker explained that this was coming off the back of him having his second hip surgery, and claimed that he was “oblivious to it.”
Cena confirmed to The Undertaker that the storyline was his idea, but he did receive approval prior to the call-out, stating:
“So, yes, I want to take credit for that, but I also want to say that, in not going into business for myself, I asked if it was an option, and I was told that it was an option.”

This WrestleMania 34 match marked Undertaker’s first bout following what was thought to be his retirement bout at WrestleMania 33, with the Deadman leaving his gloves, coat and hat in the ring after losing to Roman Reigns in the main event.
While some fans are still holding out hope that John Cena wrestles again following the 17-time world champion’s final bout in December 2025, this seems less likely, with Cena already serving in other roles with WWE.
John Cena recently reflected on his role as the host of WrestleMania 42, calling one of his segments one of his favorite WrestleMania moments ever.
