Booker T has opened up about his role on the WWE announce team and the pivotal role Michael Cole played in making it happen.

For the past few years, Booker T has partnered Vic Joseph on the NXT commentary team, where he has done a stellar job of getting talents over with his creative catchphrases and ad-libs to help build their characters.

Booker has had a number of stints on WWE commentary dating back to 2011, and he credits Michael Cole for taking the chance on him.

On the latest No-Contest Wrestling podcast, Booker said:

“Michael Cole changed my life, he really did. Michael Cole put me on the commentary team for no damn reason.

“The thing is, I knew I sucked. I knew how bad I sucked at that desk when I was doing it, and I stayed there for three or four years, then I left and I came back. I was like, ‘Why does Cole keep me around?’

“But Cole saw something in me. He knew I could do the job, but he knew I had to be me when I was doing the job, and finally I’m getting the chance to be me in NXT.

“There’s no way I should be doing what I’m doing right now. I really shouldn’t be. I really should not be doing what I’m doing.

“If it wasn’t for Michael Cole bringing me a part of the broadcast team, and believing in me, and working with me… it’s amazing, he’s an amazing dude, he really is.”

How Vince McMahon Affected Booker T’s Commentary

Booker also described how Vince McMahon used to try to direct his commentary with lines that Booker would never actually say in his usual vocabulary.

He explained:

“Things were different back then. When I was doing commentary back then, I remember Vince McMahon, he came in my headset one time and he told me, ‘Hey Book, tell them ‘Much to his chagrin.”

“And I said, ‘I can’t say that, I’m gonna lose all my street cred if I say that (laughs). We don’t use those kind of words.’
