Nick Aldis has revealed when he got “blown up” during his WWE SummerSlam 2026 match with GUNTHER.
For the first time in his two decade wrestling career, last night’s SummerSlam Night One premium live event saw Nick Aldis compete inside a WWE ring, when he challenged ‘The Ring General’ GUNTHER one-on-one.
The match was not only Aldis’ first in WWE, but also his first wrestling match in general in three years, as the former NWA and TNA World Champion has spent those years working behind the scenes in WWE, as well as performing as the General Manager of Friday Night SmackDown.
Given his absence from the ring, Aldis had concerns about his in-ring conditioning heading into SummerSlam – something he detailed in a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet ahead of SummerSlam.
While the performance of ‘The National Treasure’ was praised by Triple H and the fans inside the U.S. Bank Stadium, Aldis has revealed that he did get “blown up” during the match.
Speaking with Sam Roberts on WWE Now, Aldis was asked how he felt after the match, to which he responded:
Aldis: “So tired (laughs). I was so blown.”
Roberts: “Were you?”
Aldis: “Yeah. Everyone talks about this, nothing replicates working in the ring and it really is true. I’ve been doing the most intense, hard conditioning workouts for the last couple weeks. Genuinely never ever trained that hard my whole life and still four minutes in I’m like ‘Oh my god.’”
Aldis would later state his belief that he got blown up during his entrance, which saw him use Oasis ‘Morning Glory’ as his theme music.
Aldis said:
“I think I blew up in my entrance.”

The English star recalled bringing up his concerns about his in-ring conditioning to WWE’s Senior Vice President Ed Koskey after being told about his match with GUNTHER – one month ahead of time at Night of Champions 2026:
“That’s the first thing I told Ed Koskey when I first found out about this. Look, to find out quite out of the blue you can have a match with one of the top guys in the world, top guy in the company, at SummerSlam, in a stadium, amazing.
“But when he told me, that was in Saudi Arabia, and I went ‘When is SummerSlam?’ August 1. And today’s June 30 or June 29. I was like ‘That’s a month.’
“I go ‘Ed, there’s a big difference between physique shape and ring shape and I am not in ring shape.’ You have an awful lot of faith in me to – because you know, without having too many conversations I had a pretty good idea of what it was probably gonna be.”
Further exemplifying WWE’s faith in his abilities, Aldis recalled how casual Triple H and the company’s upper management were about him returning to the ring:
“I think the most surprising thing about all this was how causal Triple H and upper management seemed to be about this. No one’s kind of gone ‘Are you ready? Can you do this? Are you good with this?’ Everyone’s like ‘You’re gonna have a match with GUNTHER.’ ‘I haven’t worked in three years, what are you doing?’”
