Rey Mysterio Comments On AAA’s Growth Following WWE Acquisition

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has commented on the growth of AAA following WWE’s acquisition of the promotion.

On the pre-show to WrestleMania 41 last year, it was announced that WWE had purchased Lucha Libre promotion AAA, with the promotion now operating under the WWE umbrella.

Just over a year later and AAA is arguably WWE’s most exciting weekly product, with the recent mask vs. mask match between the two El Grande Americanos being touted as an instant classic by both the company and fans.

This weekend over San Diego Comic Con, it was announced that Mattel would be producing a line of AAA action figures, another major step in the expansion of AAA.

Speaking to Ringside Collectibles, Rey spoke about the new line of AAA action figures, as well as the growth of the brand under WWE’s ownership.

He said:

“I’m very excited, very positive minded, optimistic that it is definitely going the direction that, at one time Konnan wanted this direction to eventually happen, to be able to display Lucha Libre around the world.

“From the group of guys that entered WCW in 96, through WCW a lot of wrestling fans were able to discover what Lucha Libre was, they gave us the opportunity.

“Now with the acquisition with WWE, with AAA, now it’s stamped all over the world, so it’s a very exciting moment not just for me as a first timer, being with AAA from the moment it kicked off, to still be around and enjoy this full circle moment is incredible.

“The AAA talent, they’re also excited to see the growth, and how it’s happening so fast, the evolution of the sport is happening so fast, so I’m happy the world is witnessing and enjoying it with us at the same time.”

AAA Crossover With WWE Main Roster?

With WWE announcing an upcoming WWE x AAA Worlds Collide show in Chicago alongside AEW’s All Out pay-per-view on the same day and same city, we will likely soon see even more AAA integration with the WWE main roster.

Rey Fenix had been defending the AAA Cruiserweight Championship on SmackDown before the show returned to two hours, with his matches being one of the things that have seemingly fallen in importance following the show’s reduced time.

Dominik Mysterio also still reigns as the AAA Mega Champion, with him defending the belt against El Grande Americano at TripleMania, both of who will also likely have a major role on Worlds Collide given their familiarity with the main roster audience.
