After SummerSlam, Chelsea Green is the Interim WWE Women’s Champion, and Matt Cardona has celebrated her success.
Night Two of SummerSlam saw Chelsea Green overcome Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton to become Interim WWE Women’s Champion.
Triggered by Rhea Ripley suffering a legitimate knee injury, all five competitors were chosen through a series of qualifying matches which took place on prior episodes of SmackDown.
Addressing his real-life wife’s victory, Matt Cardona reflected on Green’s tenacity in her wrestling career, tweeting:
“Prove people RIGHT! I was with you when they wouldn’t even give you a tryout. I was with you when they fired you.
“I knew you were a superstar. The fans knew you were a superstar. I love you, @ImChelseaGreen …the NEW @wwe Women’s Champion!”
Cardona would also throw himself into the championship picture in cheeky fashion with a separate tweet noting:
“I am now 1/2 of the @WWE Women’s Champion! I love you, @ImChelseaGreen!”
Both posts would be accompanied by photos of Cardona kissing his wife, the first at ringside, the second backstage in the photo area.
Love Conquers All
Cardona and Green have, on more than one occasion, spoken of their love of each other, not just on a personal level, but also in a professional capacity.
Ahead of Cardona signing a new contract earlier this year, Green reflected on her husband’s rise on the independent wrestling scene, sharing her belief that a return should happen. More recently, Cardona has praised Green for “maximising her minutes” regardless of how much and what type of screen time she gets in WWE.
To some, it may be seen as favoritism, but there’s an argument to be made that both stars recognize the caliber of each other, regardless of the environment they are in. After all, the pair began dating in early 2017, when they were both at very different points in their respective careers, with contracts, releases and a multitude of challenges coming their way.
Their relationship may be recognized by WWE, but their paths have been kept very much separate by creative. Addressing the possibility of working with Cardona, Green would state that she “would love that“. Maybe, one day, WWE will bring back its Mixed Match Challenge, allowing members of the men’s and women’s roster to team up for a good cause.
