The real reason for GUNTHER defeating Jey Uso for the World Heavyweight Championship on the June 9 WWE Raw episode has now been revealed.

Jey Uso’s world title reign ended on Monday’s show, with GUNTHER putting the champion to sleep to regain his World Heavyweight Championship.

Some fans have questioned the decision to have Jey Uso lose the gold back to the man he originally beat for the title to end Main Event Jey’s 51 day reign.

Per Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this title change happened because Triple H made the call to make the planned GUNTHER vs Goldberg WWE match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Meltzer specifically wrote the following about WWE:

It was confirmed to us the reason this happened is because Paul Levesque made the call to make Gunther vs. Bill Goldberg on 7/12’s Saturday Night’s Main Event a title match, likely since it was going on the same day as All In Texas.

Gunther vs. Goldberg was always going to be the retirement match and it was always going against All in Texas and on NBC, with the idea of maximizing that day with the big match not on Netflix but on free network TV.

GUNTHER vs Goldberg hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing.

Goldberg is also yet to be announced for the July 12 WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event show, however it was heavily speculated that he’d wrestle here, as he had previously stated that his retirement match would be taking place this summer in Atlanta, Georgia.

We will continue to provide updates on Goldberg’s WWE return and retirement as they become available.
