‘Let Me Clear This Up’ – AJ Styles Clarifies Current WWE Role

Having retired as an in-ring star earlier this year, AJ Styles has provided some clarification on his current role in WWE.

This year’s Royal Rumble saw AJ Styles bring his in-ring career to an end with a loss to GUNTHER, with the star later revealing the backstage reaction to the moment.

Styles continues to work for WWE, adopting a backstage role that sees him as involved in “a lot of things“, with a focus on helping talent improve.

Speaking on his own The AJ Styles Show, the WWE Hall of Famer would reveal that he has stepped into the coaching space on a temporary basis, saying:

“Let me clear this up by the way. One of our coaches had to get knee surgery. I have now taken his place until he’s back. I am not a coach per se that’s down here every week. I am just filling in until he’s back. That’s it.

“I’m actually having a lot of fun with it, and I’m trying to make everything we do very, very practical, because this is what I see going on. So, we’re going to do this and this right here and make sense of why you’re doing it. I want to see your footwork, little things like that. I’m changing stuff up a little bit because the more you do the same thing over and over, the less you want to come to class and work hard, because it gets redundant. So I’m trying to change things up a little bit, but not take away from what they already know.

“First of all, doing something you don’t know is always harder, and so when we change it up, it’s harder, but it’s also a little bit more exciting and keeps you interested.”

Retirement has opened up opportunities for AJ Styles that may not have existed as a full time star.

Able to tap into his knowledge across multiple decades, in a number of companies and on the international stage, Styles is able to share how he was able to continue to perform at the top level right up to his final match and what made the star a successful performer wherever he appeared.

He’s far from the first star to find further success after his in-ring career comes to an end, with fellow Hall of Famer The Undertaker being one such name who continues to work for WWE, serving as a producer in AAA, as one such example.

Being able to shape the current and future generations in a positive way is something that these veterans are clearly proud to do, following in the footsteps of the likes of Triple H and Shawn Michaels, both names who continue to have great influence in their relevant executive roles in WWE.

They all could fade into the background, being brought forth when the need arises for the “pop”, but all have continued to serve a role that sees them parlay their multi-faceted experience into a valuable tool for stars who may, one day, be spoken of with the same reverence that the veteran names have all enjoyed.
