Triple H has shared his thoughts on the growth of Bobby Roode, from his first steps in WWE to the producer role he currently occupies.
A former TNA World Heavyweight Champion, Bobby Roode signed with WWE in 2016, intially appearing in NXT until his main roster call up the following year.
Stepping away as an in-ring competitor in late 2022 due to neck fusion surgery, Roode would transition into a producer role.
Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? With Cody Rhodes, Triple H shared his appreciation of Roode from not knowing him to the current day, saying:
“It’s funny, I didn’t know Bobby at all, and he came into NXT when we were there. A couple of things I realised about him very quickly was, one: he had an innate ability for this, two: I don’t think he had been taught a whole lot.
“Not from the wrestling standpoint, he knew that, from the television standpoint and the psychology standpoint. I think because TNA was sort of a, ‘Hey, just go do it’ and that’s what comes out. Nobody did TV like here.
“Guys would come in, AJ Styles said this to me after he’d been with us for like six months, he made a comment to me, pulled me aside, and he was like, ‘Hey, mind if I give you something I’ve noticed, don’t ever let anybody come here who didn’t go through NXT first.’
“(Triple H’ said) ‘Why do you say that?’ He (Styles) said, ‘Because man, if you had told me that when I was coming here I would have been like, you’re out of your mind I know what I’m doing.
“And then I got here, and I spent the first six months lying to myself and to everybody else, thinking I know what’s going on. I was just trying to hang on to the tiger by the tail. I didn’t get it, I couldn’t see it, you guys were saying and doing stuff, I was like, ‘What are they talking about?’
“Later, I’d realize, oh man, that’s great, I never even heard that before. He said, ‘You guys shoot a movie, everybody else is just following wrestling. Whatever’s happened, they’re following it on camera.
“Bobby was a guy, that same thing, he had learned it, he just knew what he was doing, and they were following it and doing all this stuff. But when he came in, he was like a sponge. I would see him picking everybody’s brain, just for his own stuff.
“At that time I remember thinking to myself, when he wants to be done taking bumps, he’s a good guy for this (a backstage role). I always start out with he’s a grown-up as well. He’s not a kid just looking to get another paycheck. He understands the difference between business and being one of the boys and all that stuff. Grown up but gets it and has a great demeanour for it and is a sponge for it.
“The more I got to work with him, once he unfortunately had a neck injury that wasn’t subsiding, him and I spoke about it, I said, ‘Why don’t you come in and start learning to be an agent? If the medical stuff clears up, great, it’ll help your career.
“If it doesn’t, we’ll start using it.’ He jumped on it, and just very quickly, I started moving him up the line and then having a conversation with Michael (Hayes) about mentoring him. If Pat (Patterson) was the be-all-end-all, finish guy, psychology-wise, in-ring guy of that generation.
“Michael is this generation’s Pat. As Pat was winding down, Michael was very quickly becoming (his successor) so even at the end of my career, Taker’s career, Shawn’s career, Michael was the guy and still is the guy. Put all his Michael Hayes-isms aside, and I often think if he hadn’t done all the stuff he done to him throughout the 70s and 80s he’d be a certified genius.
“Because clearly, he’s killed a lot of brain cells, and he’s still at that level. But I can’t say enough about how good Michael is, and now Bobby is, to me, running side-by-side with Michael right there and learning from him at an incredible rate, much like Michael did from Pat. That’s the fun aspect of our business.”

Before his retirement, Roode was an NXT Champion and held the WWE United States Championship as well as both the SmackDown and Raw Tag Team Championships.
The Show Never Ends, And Nor Do Some Careers
Roode joins a number of stars who have seen their WWE careers continue after they have retired as in-ring talent.
Also a former TNA Wrestling star, AJ Styles recently transitioned into a backstage role in WWE following his final match, losing to GUNTHER at this year’s Royal Rumble.
Roode is in good company alongside Michael Hayes, the Senior Producer & Vice President, Creative Writing & Booking, with a team including Billy Kidman, Chris Parks (Abyss in TNA Wrestling), Jamie Noble, Jason Jordan, Kenny Dykstra, Molly Holly, Petey Williams, Shane Helms, Shawn Daivari and TJ Wilson all servicing as producers.
With the role seeing producers work closely with on-air talent to structure matches, storylines and promos, it has be a challenging task in a high-pressure live television environment. Triple H would allude to the frustrations he has faced dealing with some (unnamed) WWE talent, giving an indication as to the sort of conversations that must happen on a regular basis.
There are clearly many moving parts to the creative process in WWE, before fans even see the results on television, and it should be clear why every name in the list of producers is a former wrestling star in their own right.
