When Charlotte Flair left WWE television, she was a heel and now, seven months later, she’s returned as a face.
Flair returned from a longer-than-expected period of absence, Flair returned on the December 30 episode of WWE SmackDown, defeating Ronda Rousey to become the new SmackDown Women’s Champion.
She recently spoke to Ryan Satin for Out of Character with Ryan Satin about this change of character and the challenges it brings.
Satin asked the seven-time SmackDown Women’s Champion about changes between switching from heel to face and back again, with Flair replying she had to change:
“Basically me. Take away my accolades? Take away everything?
“On ‘Raw XXX,’ originally I was gonna say, ‘And I beat Trish Stratus, Ronda Rousey, Nikki and Brie [Bella], Bayley, Becky [Lynch], name [all of the women I’ve beaten].’
“How about I just say, ‘And I’ve had the opportunity to face …[those women].'”
She would go on to explain her mindset for the change of character, saying:
“When it comes from me, I feel like I have to — there’s such a fine line [with] anything that I say.
“So it was just, ‘You know, I’ve had the opportunity to face all these people,’ and whether I’m a good guy or a bad guy, I would definitely say, ‘All of these women helped me get to where I am,’ but even just saying ‘beat’ versus ‘face’ them?
“Everything is so micromanaged. Like how many times can I say ’14-time [world champion]’ in a promo? Just once. Maybe just don’t say it at all! You know what I mean?”
Flair was recently critical of her introduction by Ric Flair on the WWE Raw 30th anniversary show.
She also named her dream opponents on a recent episode of WWE The Bump and got a response from Mickie James.
